I'm thinking Avatar, unless the AMPAS loooooove Hurt Locker. I'd be more confident in Hurt Locker if Anthony Mackie had gotten a Supporting Actor nomination.

No, thanks. This is the first time in years where the winner of Best Picture wasn't set in stone. Plus, the new 'Best Picture' will either be the highest or lowest grossing winner ever. This is a question worth asking.

Did you know that 'Crash' would win the award for best picture?

As well as Original Screenplay and Editing. Brokeback Mountain also won three: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Do you think that Avatar and Hurt Locker might tie for total awards won?

Is that a yes?

I do think they might, yet I cannot deign to calculate whether they probably will.

To answer your question, I was abroad that spring and didn't watch the Oscars. But reading that Crash won Best Picture was a surprise, yes. This year, neither one winning would be a surprise. Horse races for Best Picture are very uncommon.

Some people are betting money on this specific topic.

Hi MovieDude I don't t think Avatar is in contention to win best picture. I think even INGLORIOUS BASTERDS is more in contention than Avatar, and you have fooled yourself into thinking there is a horse race when there is no evidence of it.

The thread Argos linked suggests there is no clear consensus.

I thought so. Additionally, I think the other winners in recent years were more or less equally uncertain to win and certainly not 'set in stone'.

Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, The Departed, Million Dollar Baby, Return of the King, Chicago, A Beautiful Mind, and Gladiator were all absolutely frontrunners. Even ignoring the ten nominees and different voting system, there is not one movie that is so far ahead of the pack. The Hurt Locker only made 12 million dollars. I'd bet there are people in the Academy who do not want the winner of Best Picture to be the lowest grossing (and certainly least theatrically attended) ever.

Except for 'The Return of the King' neither was really sure to win.

I reckon that is as true as it is sad.

I think so Avatar will win more technical awards than Hurt Locker if not the big ones. They are anyways competing against each other in most of the categories and I think in Technical Awards Hurt Locker is going to loose give or take a few.

Hurt Locker. It just seems inevitable.
