At the Oscars of course. This is what I'm thinking: Avatar - 9 Best Picture Best Director Best Editing Best Visual Effects Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Make-Up Best Score Best Song The Hurt Locker - 9 Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Supporting Actor Best Original Screenplay Best Editing Best Cinematography Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Up in the Air - 7 Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Supporting Actress Best Adapted Screenplay Best Editing Inglourious Basterds - 7 Best Picture Best Director Best Supporting Actor Best Original Screenplay Best Editing Best Cinematography Best Art Direction Up - 6 Best Picture Best Animated Picture Best Original Screenplay Best Sound Editing Best Sound Mixing Best Score Invictus - 5 Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Supporting Actor Best Adapted Screenplay Nine - 5 (I'd add a sixth if Cotillard really goes Supporting) Best Picture Best Cinematography Best Costume Design Best Art Direction Best Song Precious - 4 Best Picture Best Actress Best Supporting Actress Best Adapted Screenplay An Education - 4 Best Picture Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Adapted Screenplay District 9 - 4 (probably most nominations for a non-BP nominee if Nine stays in the Top 10) Best Adapted Screenplay Best Sound Editing Best Visual Effects Best Editing A Serious Man - 3 Best Picture Best Original Screenplay Best Cinematography So yeah, I see Avatar and The Hurt Locker leading the bunch. |

Makeup branch is wacky, so don't know if they'll make Avatar eligible or select it, since the makeup is still basically CGI there, right? I have similar question regarding Cinematography; how will they view it? Art Direction is highly likely though. For The Hurt Locker, I don't see it getting supporting actor, but the other 8 are either locked or quite likely. |

Up to this point, The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air look to be the frontrunners for the rest of the awards season (Avatar has some potential too). One advantage I see Up in the Air has over The Hurt Locker is that the former is still in platform release while the latter's theatrical run is long over (Summit may be planning a re-release). The media exposure (including ad campaign and media buzz) given to Up in the Air is going to be much bigger than the award buzz on The Hurt Locker. Also, do not forget the Oscars is a (sort of) popularity contest. Name recognition helps when winners are decided by popular votes in a pretty big community. Up in the Air also has an edge over The Hurt Locker in this department. It does not hurt (no pun intended haha) when Up in the Air is backed a big studio (Paramount). Barring the above disadvantages, I think The Hurt Locker still has what it takes to win the big awards (Best Director and Best Picture). The timely and relevant subject matter (war) lands a serious contender status for the film. A war film by a female director spells an underdog success story to me. Hollywood LOVES underdog. |

This thread is ridiculous in at least ten ways. |

Star Trek could also potentially get 4 without getting in BP. |

I'm now thinking that District 9 might score 7-9 nominations... Best Picture Best Adapted Screenplay Best Editing Best Make-Up Best Visual Effects Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Cinematography (maybe) Best Art Direction (longshot) Nine on the other hand will have to settle for 2-3 nominations it seems. The movie completely burned... Star Trek could get a nice 5+ tally as well. Avatar is currently headed for 10 nominations, it seems. |

I think District 9 will get nominated for Art Direction, yes. 8 noms, tied with The Hurt Locker and Basterds. Avatar leads with 10. |
