My predictions:

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Ponyo
The Princess and the Frog
Up

Up is of course a lock. Cloudy have both the reviews and the box office and should be safe. Ponyo and Fantastic Mr. Fox have the reviews. And then betting on Princess and Frog to fill the last spot.

An interesting year for Oscar. Ten BP nominees after decades and for the first time 5 nominees in the Best Animated category.

How is it this year has so many submissions when it seems 2006 I think had so many more and in the end didn't make it?
Weird.

Hmm...

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
The Princess and the Frog
Up
Coraline
The Fantastic Mr. Fox

I somehow get a feeling that Ponyo will be snubbed...dunno. Just can't see Coraline missing.

Pretty optimistic with the predictions...no Surf's Up, Shark Tale, Treasure Planet, or Jimmy Neutron quality nominee seeking in?

Surf's Up got good reviews, didn't it?

I think if one of the better reviewed films get snubbed, it'll be The Fantastic Mr. Fox instead of Ponyo. The former has an unusual style, while Ponyo should be safe considering Howl's Moving Castle got nominated with less glowing reviews, smaller box office, and only three spots available.

I could see Monsters vs. Aliens contend for a nom, but with three box office successes (Up, Cloudy, and likely Princess) available to choose already, I don't see it getting enough support. Ponyo, Mr. Fox, and Coraline all have much more passionate supporters. The question will be each group's respective size.

A Town Called Panic's trailer is on Apple. What the fuck.
It looks like shit. I don't care what you argue, the fact you use frickin plastic toys and what painted background shows nothing more than laziness. It's not art, it's not intelligent, it's pathetic.
Revolting.

It doesn't qualify. It is 60% CGI and 40% live action.

What are the percentages needed to qualify?

I'm surprised to see "Alvin." While clearly CGI-heavy, there also seems to be plenty of "real" footage, too, what with Jason Lee's character and all... Of course, it has zero chance of being nominated, so it doesn't matter much anyway.

Oh, and does A Christmas Carol have any chance of sneaking in? It's my personal choice for best animated film of 2009, so I hope so.

No they didn't nominate The Polar Express which had bigger box-office and less competition. Hell, they went with freakin' Shark Tale instead.

The only reason why Shark Tale got the nod, was because it was freakin Dreamworks!!!

While I could see Up winning, I seriously think it has major competition in Princess and the Frog. And if one thinks about the politics of the Oscars... Well, Pixar has already won four times in this category, and this is the first Disney hand-drawn animation since that horrid Home on the Range AND the first Disney full-length 2D-animated princess movie since Mulan.

And then you take into consideration the story, the artistic design, the music, etc. and PatF really comes out on top, IMHO.

So.... I think PatF just might beat Up.

Hmm, no way Up gets a Best Picture nom and still misses on Best Animated (and it is getting a BP nom).

That said I think the fifth slot is still interesting as it's between Fox and Ponyo now.

I think Fox winning the LAFCA over Up makes it a lock, along with Up and Coraline (AFI Top 10).

I'm very disappointed with the lack of wins and screenplay mentions for Up in the various critics' award so far. Does this mean support is not that high for Up and it could even miss out in BP nom even with ten nominees?

Up is winning animation and getting a nom for BP.

The screenplay mentions are hurt in part due to most of these awards lumping in both original and adapted screenplay. Up won't miss a BP nom. Look at the TOP 10 lists where available. Up is pretty high on those. It has the support.

My predictions:

“Coraline”
“Fantastic Mr. Fox”
“Ponyo”
“The Princess and the Frog”
“Up”

UP will win.
