The village wasnt panned that much by critics. It got 3 stars in my local paper, and the reviews were very mixed.

Star Wars: EPISODE II - Attack of the Clones as well as the Matrix Sequels were nominated in their years and those got mostly even better reviews than The Village. Each year they nominate one blockbuster and this one seems like the most likely candidate.
