Kris over at Incontention is floating the possibly. It's happened before:

Quote:
Over the 10 years the Academy tried this experiment between 1932 and 1943, we saw nine films receive single nominations for Best Picture: “She Done Him Wrong” (1932), “Smilin’ Through” (1932), “Here Comes the Navy” (1934), “The House of Rothschild” (1934), “Ruggles of Red Gap” (1935), “Libeled Lady” (1938), “Grand Illusion” (1938), “One Foot in Heaven” (1941) and “The Ox-Bow Incident” (1943).

Kris won't say what his pick is for the solo nominee. But he did rule out some films in his comment section.

Do you think it's likely to see a film nominated for Best Picture and Best Picture alone?

My current guess is if it happens, its a documentary that somehow misses out on Best Documentary. I have a hard time thinking of anything else that wouldn't be able to land one of 10 writing slots, 20 acting slots, or something in the multiple tech categories.

Something with a lot of "prestige" that just doesn't have what it takes to make the Top 5 elsewhere. I think Bobby could have made the Top 10 in 2006, even with zero other nominations. So something like that, I guess, though I'm not sure what it would be ATM.

ETA: Oh, and I think Gran Torino could have made it, so also something that peaked late enough to make a lot of Top 10s in categories, but not Top 5s.

How come the granddaddy of them all was not included? Grand Hotel not only was a single-nominee, it also WON.

Because there were only 8 nominees that year? Or an oversight.

Ah, most likely because of the 8-nominee thing.

That's not going to happen. When was the last time we had a BP nominee with less than 3 noms? Four Weddings and a Funeral?

Not happening.

When was the last time you had 10 BP nominees?

Those were simply different times. Now it seems you either make it with a few or you don't. Hell, even films like Juno manage four noms without any tech support.

It's certainly possible, just difficult and unlikely. Gran Torino is a good example.

I think Gran Torino would have gotten a Best Actor nom as well then.

I think you are stupid.
I think Jon the Lyrik means it was probably in the top 10 vote-getters for BP last year, which means it would have gotten in. This does not effect best actor.

I think you don't get this. What I mean is that Eastwood's chances were head over heels above Gran Torino's chances so if Eastwood couldn't manage it to the Top 5 of Actors last year, GT wouldn't have made it to the Top 10 BP either. WALL-E, TDK, Revolutionary Road and several more had a better standing. Even Changeling did.

I don't think Gran Torino was in the top ten either, though it was certainly possible. I'll bet Changeling was, though.

Yep. For whatever reason this did get some major love, even though the reviews and general opinions seemed rather mixed.

Actually, Hairspray could have pulled it off.

Hmm, yeah, maybe that.
