I think we may have our first victim...Funny People. Down to 70% on Rottentomatoes, it's almost a lock to be Apatow's worst-reviewed film yet, instead of his first shot at any kind of Oscar glory. If it can stay above 75% though, Sandler's still got an outside shot at Actor.

Funny People seems to be blazing a path straight here, judging from the reviews.

And I'd like to wait for the main release reaction of IB before declaring it dead - S. Actor and some techs are still possible.

If the first reviews are anything to go by Julie & Julia seem DOA too. Streep gets a approvals, but the movie looks to finish with very bad reviews. It's Streep so she might overcome that, but it will be definitely a tougher thing to do now.

Inglourious Basterds has a great shot at Supporting Actor, but yeah, other than that it's pretty much dead.

what's the next Oscar-y movie coming out? Basterds and Woodstock are already dead, so they don't count.

A bunch of stuff will premiere in Toronto/Venice but as far as general releases, The Informant! on Sept 18th.

I'm interested in how the reviews for Ponyo are and see if it has any chance at a nom outside Animated.

What do you think of there? Picture?

Yeah, I'm not hearing that it's top-tier Miyazaki. If it gets reviews like Spirited Away and makes $15 million, then sure, but that ain't happening.

And besides, there's no room for 2 animated films. AMPAS arent that progressive.

Don't think BP is possible unless it's getting Spirited Away type of reviews, which judging by the IMDb score is unlikely. But score/song/sound categories are possible? I haven't watched it, so not sure how strong it is in those departments.

Avatar should be in here.

In fact, I'd be willing to say District 9 has a better shot than Avatar.

Perhaps Inglourious Basterds isn't completely dead yet?

Pro
BFCA: 89
RT: 82%, including the first 4-star review of the year from James Berardinelli with some splendid words

Con
Weak average at both RT (7.1) and MC (74)

I'm thinking at least Christoph Waltz has a shot; maybe screenplay?
