Post 2009: The Year Of Brad Pitt?
2008 was the year of Kate Winslet and Robert Downey Jr and it looks like 2009 could be the year of Brad Pitt. He has two very high profile films coming out.

Up first Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino's 7th feature film. Brad Pitt stars as a WWII solider leading a suicide mission into the heart of Nazi controlled France. Inglourious Basterds is set to open at Cannes.

And there's Tree of Life, Terrence Malick's 5th feature film. Pitt stars as a disillusioned Midwesterner in the 1950's (vague, I know). Tree of Life is set for a Fall/Winter release.

I am curious which film stands the best chance of getting Oscar attention for Pitt.

Malick has a spotty record with Oscar:

Badlands - zero noms
Days of Heaven - 4 noms, 1 win
The Thin Red Line - 7 noms (including BP/BD), 0 wins
The New World - 1 nom, 0 wins

QT is even less stellar

Reservoir Dogs - zero noms
Pulp Fiction - 7 noms (including BP/BD), 1 win
Jackie Brown - 1 nom, 0 wins
Kill Bill Volume I - zero noms
Kill Bill Volume II - zero noms
Deathproof - zero noms

Sight unseen, do you think Brad Pitt stands a chance of being nominated again in the Lead Actor category, and for which film?

I have a feeling Inglorious Bastards will disappoint, even among Tarantino fans.

It seems like the kind of movie Rob Zombie would want to make.

And Malick's senile and reclusive.

Unfortunately, now that you mention it... Downey Jr. probably won't win for Tropic Thunder, but The Soloist could be promising (and the Academy likes Joe Wright). Four to go for B. Supporting Actor in 2009, then?

No, it's the year of his "Ocean's" co-star, Matt Damon. ;)

Though I'm very excited for both of Pitt's 2009 films, neither pops out as a definite awards contender. At least not in my opinion. Inglorious Basterds, however hyped, is a pulpy, brutal Quentin Tarantino movie. It's not Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. In fact, it may end up playing better with the Sin City/300 crowd than the average Academy voter. And isn't it coming out in August?

As for The Tree of Life... Terrence Malick is obviously a legend, but he's not exactly an Academy favorite. They all but ignored The New World (one of my favorite movies). Granted, it didn't have the sanest release pattern (select cities, withdrawn, more editing, wide release), but still... Even the Malick movie the Academy loved, The Thin Red Line, didn't win anything (though this may have more to do with "Ryan" competition than the film's merits themselves). The Tree of Life is the biggest ? of 2009 and the relationship between the Academy and Malick is just as befuddling. It could go either way, up or down, sideways, who knows...

I'm QT for life and loved the screenplay for Inglourious Basterds. Hopefully others will as well.

Tree of Life feels very rushed for Malick - no good!

Doesn't he usually take about 7-20 years betwen his films?

Pushing it to spring was not a good sign. Also, it kinda seems as if RDJ is actually lead in it.

The Soloist is completely out of every race, IMO.

Have high hopes for Basterds. Though ive got the same feeling as I had with my most anticipated of 2008 - Ben Button - I would have preferred Pitt not starring.
