here's the real one (I like the other one better) For what will be one of the lowest rated broadcasts, that tagline is pretty funny.

Sad that WALL-E and TDK together made more than twice as much money as the number that the fie BP nominees will end up with.

The Reader is #144 on the 150 Films Listed on BOM For 2008 Yearly Grosses.
It has grossed less than
U2 3D Meet Dave Doomsday
Not to be outdone, Frost/Nixon is #133

Well, at least both will top Letters from Iwo Jima.

No, usually not. But it kinda makes The Reader's nom seem even more random.

I don't get the argument that the Oscars are wrong for nominating small films. Has no effect on the quality, which is what's being voted on.

Re: Official Poster For The 81st Annual Academy Awards
Yeah really it shouldnt matter what the box office of a film is, the vote should be based on what is the "best". They could all make sub $10m and it wouldnt matter.
However, the term "best" is pretty subjective and the academy doesnt necessarily vote on quality.
If anything TDK should have been nominated because it was slim pickings this year. A year like 2007 and TDK wouldnt have been close.

Best Actor race would also have been a no contest (sadly as thats probably the most exciting category to we have this year). Zodiac and Into the Wild may have faired better this year too.

Re: Official Poster For The 81st Annual Academy Awards
Sorry to disappoint you, folks, but even with TWBB this year, Slumdog would have won.
Really.
It is an audience's favorite, like The Departed. Only better-reviewed. It's a $120+ million success. And hell, it got evenmore noms than TWBB.
It would have owned anyway.
Hell, it would even have a chance against No Country for Old Men. It'd be rather equal...

Re: Official Poster For The 81st Annual Academy Awards
You're insane. Slumdog would have lost just about every critic award to There Will Be Blood. It's only saving grace would have been it's box office but without the press, who knows how much it would have grossed instead.
The only reason it got more noms was the Score fuckup last year and whatever the hell happened in Song this year to allow two Slumdog songs.

Re: Official Poster For The 81st Annual Academy Awards
Loyal, seriously...TWBB is not Best Picture material for AMPAS (I'm not talking about its actual quality!). It's too bitter and small. Even with a BP win it wouldn't have made more than $55-60 million and considering it is not as important of a film as Crash theme-wise, i don't think they'd let that happen.
Slumdog is an audiences-favorite. It is this year's Juno only with: 1 a more respected director 2. The British fraction fully behind it 3. It fulfills the minority quota 4. There's NO backlash like Juno got it at some point.
And, dude, Sally Hawkins also won more Best Actress awards at the critics' awards this year...so where's her nom?
Sideways mostly sweeped the critics and it still has never been a frontrunner at any point for BP. And THAT was actually a far more acessible film than TWBB.
No, simply NO.

Re: Official Poster For The 81st Annual Academy Awards
There Will Be Blood harkened back to the days of classic Hollywood, the type of films destined for Oscar glory.
To call it small and bitter seems like projection to me. And you know you can't compare the Best actress race to Best picture, apples and oranges.
Again, Slumdog is the audience favourite because it won all the critical acclaim this year. Had it been sidestepped by a far better film, do you really think North American audiences would flock to an Indian film helmed by a Brit? NO way.
The fact that you're comparing the acclaim for Sideways to There Will Be Blood shows that you may have been asleep at the wheel last Oscar season. There Will Be Blood was a monster, as was No Country. Either film would have absolutely destroyed Slumdog.

Yeah, films like Citizen Kane and Giant...all BP winners...oh wait... Loyal, if you check Metacritic...I think Sideways still has more 100-scores than TWBB, it has a higher overall rating and it won far more critics awards. You might say that was because Blood was up against NCFOM...but you can't find out. Fact is that except for LAFCA, I think, Blood hasn't won anything major. Even stuff that No Country didn't sweep went to Atonement (BAFTA and GG). Slumdog is getting EVERYTHING this year. Blood didn't even get a SAG Ensemble nom (rightfully so because there isn't much of an Ensemble to speak of) - whereas Sideways has won that. Sideways won BFCA, GG Comedy/Musical, Chicago Film Critics Award, ISA, SWEEPED LAFCA, SWEEPED NYFCC and won two NBR awards. It also had four SAG noms overall. It also has always been a frontrunner for Best Adapted Screenplay, something TWBB hasn't been at any point. So, how the hell was TWBB bigger during its race, dude?
