Post subject:  Director Guild Awards - Tonight, January 29 - Final Picks

With all of the discussion about the Oscars, this is tonight.

Also is there any connection on the way that the DGA goes and how it relates to the Oscars. ( For example, I think that Scorcese has never won an DGA or an Oscar for Directing. While Eastwood has won both before with Unforgiven.)

Also are the voters for the DGA, the same ones who vote for the Oscars?

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures

Nominees:
Aviator, The (2004) - Martin Scorsese
Finding Neverland (2004) - Marc Forster
Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Clint Eastwood
Ray (2004/I) - Taylor Hackford
Sideways (2004) - Alexander Payne

I've heard that some guild members are Academy members as well.

Anyways, the DGA winner is announced TONIGHT? Neato.

PEACE, Mike ;)

I don't know whether this thread is necessary since the award isn't handed out yet, but anyhow: To answer some of the questions.

There is a really big connection between DGA and best director oscar. Only on a handful occasiions the winner's haven't matched. The only big difference was when Ron Howard won the DGA Award for Apollo 13 and wasn't even nominated for the Osca (or the other way around, I'm not sure anymore).
The Reason is that the voters group is nearly the same since only directors are voting for the Best Directing award at the Oscars (that is why those Guild awards are the best indicators for the Oscars) - and those are usually members of the DGA as well.
There's also a small connection between the DGA Award and the Best Picture award. For example a movie that won the Golden Globe and the PGA award and the DGA award never before failed to win the Best Picture Oscar. If Marty wins tonight Aviator has won this holy trinity...

My feeling is if Scorsese wins DGA, the race is over for Oscar BP. If Eastwood wins, we'll have a real race down the stretch.

I think DGA didn't match Oscar BD only 5 out of last 50 or more years, including Ron Howard and Ang Lee, both of whom won DGA but didn't win oscar.

But...it's still very possible that Scorcese wins the best director award and M$B best picture.

The SAG awards wiull be more telling, IMO. Since the actors are the largest branch of the academy. If Swank and Freeman both win their awards I think it will show very strong support for the movie. (one more week!)

What if Swank, Freeman, and Blanchett all win, and The Aviator wins Best Ensemble? Which film do you give the edge to then?

Sorry, I didn't know that there wasn't a ceremony. Anyway, I thought this deserved a fresh post for the awards - no one was talking about this until I posted it. Looking at some of the comments, I am glad I posted it as for me at least, the answers are pretty interesting. Plus the director has been a hot topic in the Oscar thread.

To me after the Oscars, this, the DGA, or maybe the SAG awards might be the most interesting winners. But I don't know alot of the others.

Well, Eastwood did indeed win...

EASTWOOD WINS DGA'S TOP AWARD
Helmer an Oscar front-runner

The Directors Guild of America has tapped Clint Eastwood as winner of
its top award for directing Warner Bros. boxing drama "Million Dollar
Baby." Steven Spielberg presented Eastwood with the Outstanding
Directorial Achievement in Feature Film kudo in ceremonies Saturday
night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

That really ups the chances of M$B bringing it home at the Oscars.

wow.

SO glad and happy for him. My pick of the year (of those nominated!)

but what the hell does this say about Oscar?

Still positive Scorsese will win Director and still predicting Aviator for Picture but it's as if they're throwing these surprises on purpose to throw us off! IT would be a delight to see Baby win!

Wow, oscar race just keeps getting more exciting. Marty still has the oscar BD in the bag, but the BP is a dead heat. All eyes on SAG now.

On a separate note, I don't know what the deal is between DGA and Scorsese. 6 times now and no win. Incredible.

Marty can have his turn another year.

I'd love to see Eastwood clean up, but I see a split, with Scorcese getting a pity award for directing :-({|= and Million Dollar baby winning Best Picture.
