Hooray for fulfilling the racial quota. :|

That's why I predicted her.

Officially timed, her performance comes out to 4 minutes, 29 seconds. Nearly half of that is her 1 minute, 40 second scene where she talks down Denzel and slaps him. If she were to win that would pass Beatrice Straight in Network for the shortest Oscar winning performance EVER.

Race + Veteran Status x slapping one of Hollywood's biggest stars = Oscar success

What an equation.

Pity nod. As if she was even memorable in that movie. Disgusting. Sickening. At least get nominated for something you deserve. How long was she even on screen (I know it doesn't matter) but at least some people like Judi Dench can make a role memorable whereas this one is as forgettable as any ever crafted.

I still think it was more impressive than Keener's, and I love Keener.

Sue me

There's been worse short nominations (the sex girl in Midnight Cowboy comes to mind, LOL)

Interestingly, Beatrice Straight's big (short) moment was when she started yelling at William Holden's character in Network.

Hmmm. I disagree with most. It is the only Award worthy thing about AG. I should probably hide for saying that.

Although I do think Vanessa Redgrave was more memorable in her performance in Atonement.

Ruby deserves the nom, she was fantastic even though her screen time was very short.

BTW....Dee is 83 years old. Does that make her the oldest Supporting Actress nom ever?

I think Gloria Stuart (Titanic) still has that record.

You're right. I thought she was in her late 70's at the time, but apparently she was 86.

Holy fuck, Gloria Stuart is turning 98 this year. Unless imdb and google are wrong, the spirit of Jack's love is keeping her alive forever!

You know, I remember watching A Raisin in The Sun and thinking how good Ruby Dee was in it (as was Claudia McNeil). It's been over 45 years since that.

Better late than never, I suppose :)

You know, I really dug American Gangster and all, but Dee shouldn't be nominated for what pretty much amounts to one scene of actual acting. It wasn't that tough to stand in front of Denzel and scold him for his actions.

Yeah, I expected this to happen, though I rather expected Washington to get in.

I thought Washington did really nice work. I wouldn't have minded a nomination for him at all.

I don't know. I'm still mixed about it.

What was the shortest performance to ever be nominated?

6 minutes I reckon, Dame Dench won for 8.

Yea Straight's performance was around 6 minutes I think.

wait, so Dee's performance is now officially the shortest to ever be nominated? I'm confused.

As much as Ruby Dee...really doesn't deserve to be nominated for this performance...I'm happy for her. She's been so good for so long.
