Re: Oscars Countdown Thread - Full Nominations Predictions
Tom Wilkinson isn't getting snubbed for Best Supporting Actor.
And start getting more and more certain that Emile Hirsh won't make the Best Actor list. It's too strong at this point. Mortensen, Gosling, Day Lewis and Clooney are stronger than him and he has to compete with Depp and Washington for the 5th spot and those two have better chances, IMO.

How is Gosling so much stronger? I don't think there's a big difference between his and Hirsch's chances.

Raffiki wrote: How is Gosling so much stronger? I don't think there's a big difference between his and Hirsch's chances. Gosling got a Globe nom and a SAG nom. Hirsch only a SAG nom. Gosling is a previous Oscar nominee I remember Gosling making it to #2 and #3 in some critics awards. Don't remember that Hirsch appeared anywhere in the listing.

Re: Oscars Countdown Thread - Full Nominations Predictions
But Hirsch is in a movie that is looking like a pretty likely Picture nominee, and he's hardly ever offscreen during its entire running time. That really boosts his chances.

Re: Oscars Countdown Thread - Full Nominations Predictions
Yeah... and honestly, I don't see why there is so much weight behind the Golden Globes. They mean close to nothing. I mean, it's like a group of 50 people that come together and decide isn't it? Are they all even critics?
Just like Webslinger mentioned, Hirsch can get swooped up in an Into the Wild bandwagon while Gosling has to fend for himself.
I actually think Gosling might have been better and WANT Gosling to get nominated maybe even if it means kicking Hirsch out. But with all that SAG support, Into the Wild and Hirsch have a good shot at collecting some serious votes.

I think the preferential voting system of the Academy is the big difference here. I can see a lot of the people who put Into the Wild as #1 put Hirsch as #1 as well. Whereas for Tom Wilkinson, he feels like the type that people will use to fill up their top five but not at #1 even if they put Michael Clayton and Clooney as #1. Hence the frequent #2-#5 votes for him will be meaningless since they only count one name per vote instead of the presumably weighted system of the SAG.

The thing is that even those who put Into the Wild at #1 and might not even have TWBB in their Top 5...they'd still put DDL as #1. I am certain that DDL will garner something like 50-60% of overall #1 votes. Wilkinson is more likely than, say, Philip Seymour Hoffman, since his votes might be split and he has not appeared everywhere. Similar for Holbrook, he hasn't appeared everywhere either. Wilkinson, however, has been very very consistent and Michael Clayton is getting huge love as far as its acting goes.

Yeah, well, it's more of a feeling since they were nominated for the Globe, yet both snubbed for SAG, while Hirsch is the other way around. Also, they are just bigger names...(and without Washington, we wouldn't have a single African-American acting nominee this year...unless Ruby Dee pulls an upset).
