As this year progresses, what 2006 Oscar possibilities (movies, performances, etc) have you seen as 2005 goes on. |

Nothing so far, unless the academy feels it owes something to Samuel L. for Coach Carter... I kinda made a thread like this (I just bumped it up). I'll keep this one up, though, because I assume you'll be doing some more tracking where as mine is simply replacing the best actor/best actress thread. Nice idea, though. ![]() |

Now that the 2005 Oscars are over. And with March coming, hopefully we will get some movies and performances that fit this category. So remember, talk about the movies and performances you have seen. Not your you have heard. |

How did you like Joan Allen in Upside of Anger. Was Joan Allen good enough - even if yes will it hold up for the year? ------ Still looking forward to Nicole and Sean in their upcoming movie. |

You know... I never thought something like Shark Tale could get a nomination... and Robots is BETTER than Shark Tale... although not by much. So one never knows! |

Yeah, Robots might get a nomination, there's no Pixar movie this year. Is Kung-Fu Hustle eligible for anything? And is Gunner Palace for documentary? |

Best Cinematography Sin City I'm really not sure about Robots. I thought the whole thing was kind of pointless and soulless. For animated feature, Madagascar is pretty much a given, Chicken Little looks like it could be entertaining, Corpse Bride could shock with a nomination, Miyazaki's got a picture coming out, plus there always could be some recognition of some anime. And Valiant. I'm just not feelin' the Robots vibe, although if all of these (except Madagascar) do poor at the BO then Robots because a viable canidate. |

Im going to go with the historical epic trend of movies winning every 5 years since 1990 1990-Dances With wolves 1995-Braveheart 2000-Gladiator 2005-The New Word |

Oooh that's a cool stat El_masked. New World is also from a director who's previous film was nominated for director/picture, has a pretty famous and expansive cast, is from a studio who recently won an Oscar or two (New Line), and would fit with the perception that in reaction to a small drama film winning last year, that we would rebound to a bigger film. I haven't seen Crash but I think Crash is a possibility for screenplay... I'm less certain of anything that has been released so far this year having a shot at any major nominations in the acting/directing/best picture categories. And I think Sin City would be a great Cinematography canidate, although the Academy often misses the mark in this category and tends to award/nominate pictures that show up in the top tier categories. |

Hmmm. Maybe Art Direction for Sin City? And Cinematography? But I don't know. Its too early in the year and the "grande sweeping epics" haven't fully invaded yet. Were going to be seeing Sith, WoftW, and all these biggies get more attention in those categories. No one's going to give cinematography to City over Sith, Narnia, etc. But it could be the smaller guy that sneaks in for the fifth spot. edit*** Bell, MovieDude. Hustle fell off the radar way too quickly. Its not going to get a nom at all here, even if it makes it past the home submission. |

I dunno. I think the Academy might shock and give Sin City the cinematography nomination it deserves. It pushed the norm for an action movie, and it'd be nice to see something like that win over an oscar-baity/epic like "The Aviator" |

I think Sin City's chances are totally going to be dependant on how many Academy members have seen the film and actually remember it. Because the state Miramax/Dimension is in, I don't think there's going to be a lot of campaigning this year. |

I was happy that The Aviator was the only Best Picture nominee to get a cinematography nod (against Passion, Very Long Engagement, Flying Daggers, and Phantom), yet got disappointed that they had to throw the movie a bone and actually award the Oscar to the only best picture nominee. ![]() |

I dunno. The fact that Collateral wasn't nominated last year really was a kick in the face. The cinematography branch, for me, does this more than any other branch. One of the most beautiful films ever shot on digital media and The Phantom of the Opera gets nominated? |

Amadeus would of probably continued you that half decade trend if it won a year later than 1984 although its more of a period piece and biopic |

Valley Guy 3.0 wrote: Same with the 1985 winner, Out of Africa an "epic" period piece/biopic. Eh? I wouldn't really consider Out of Africa to be an "Epic" just because it had some landscape shots. I dunno. Does anyone else think this isn't an epic? I just found it to be a drama, and a fairly personal one at that too. It wasn't all that long, that cast rich, and didn't have major battle scenes. It was a wealthy, tired, woman and her brief interections with Redford's rugged wilderman. |
