I guess it helps that they have five chances to get something cool, but I quite like these. TLJ in Actor (SO underrated), Dano's first mention and a mention for Zodiac's ensemble. I also find the recurring love for Lars and the Real Girl to be interesting. Could it REALLY go far this awards season?

Easily the most exciting critics in a while.

I'm finding it a little strange that Burton seems to be getting more nominations than cast member in Sweeney Todd, or the film itself. It's usually the reverse isnt it, for musicals?

are you saying that Sweeney Todd is like any other musical? ;)

No, but Moulin Rouge! wasn't a typical musical either. Wasn't an adaptation, didn't use any original songs, etc. And the director missing out on awards still happened with it. Sweeney fits in with Chicago and Dreamgirls better than what Moulin Rouge! does.

Actually, Luhrmann got notices at BAFTA, Globes and even won at BFCA in a tie with Howard. That Academy snub remains one of the most bizarre snubs in my history of OscarWatching.

But on the subject of Burton/Sweeney Todd, it is rather odd that the only mention here is for Burton. Of course, I highly doubt these'll match up well with the Academy, so it's probably just a moot point...for now.

Again, Linney and Adams are in over Jolie and Knightley.

Good to see Paul Dano mentioned at last.

I know... :| Trust/The Unbelievable Truth were like 17/18 years ago.. and even if we only count her career as a writer/director, she's been around more time than these awards...

Winners:

Best film
"No Country for Old Men"

Best director
Joel & Ethan Coen, "No Country for Old Men"

Best actor
George Clooney, "Michael Clayton"

Best actress
Ellen Page, "Juno"

Best supporting actor
Javier Bardem, "No Country for Old Men"

Best supporting actress
Tilda Swinton, "Michael Clayton"

Best ensemble
"Juno"

Best newcomer
Diablo Cody, writer, "Juno"

Eight categories, three different winners. Huh. Either way, I believe this is the first time we know for certain that voters picked Clooney even after seeing TWBB, which I guess makes him more of a lock for a nom, at least, and maybe even a threat for the win should the Oscars not warm up to TWBB or Sweeney.

Swinton is also beginning to look like a potential dark horse should voters get sick of Ryan by February and not want to award Blanchett another Supporting Oscar.

Oh, and has Page now won more awards than Cotillard?

yeah, but Burton's a huge name, one of the biggest names to never win and still making films, whereas Baz Luhrman's basically unknown to most people.

I think Page is a big threat to Cotillard and Christie at the Oscars.

I doubt Swinton will get the award over Blanchett and Ryan, I think these two are still ahead at a comfortable distance.

No Country for Old Men is such a huge frontrunner right now for BP/BD...
