Hmm, no Atonement even in the nomination stage, not good.

BP and BD have 3 matches, another boost for Michael Clayton.

Frank Langella again. Mortenson made first appearance.

Guess they, or at least most of the critics in the group, haven't seen Sweeney Todd.

Best Actress looks like a good potential Oscar lineup; supporting actor too.

Ryan and Blanchett are the two locks in supporting actress.

They really loved Michael Clayton.

And any time Tang Wei appears, I'm one happy camper.

^You forgot Michael Clayton for BP.

Michael Clayton is really starting to piss me off btw....yuck at incestuous hollywood.

Most of their tech nominations look pretty good to match up with Oscar.

Post subject:  Re: Chicago Film Critics Nominations

Oh, and the Zodiac love makes me happy. :D

Last year's nominees. The eventual match-ups:

Picture - 4/5 (United 93 for Letters from Iwo Jima)
Director - 5/5
Actor - 4.5/5 (Leo in Departed for Leo in Blood Diamond)
Actress - 5/5 (With Gyllenhaal as sixth nominee)
S. Actor - 3/5 (Affleck, Nicholson & Sheen for Hounsou & Wahlberg)
S. Actress - 5/5 (Collette as sixth nominee)
A. Sceenplay - 3/5 (Prairie Home & Smoking for CoM & Borat)
O. Screenplay - 4/5 (United 93 for Pan's Labyrinth)

Not too shabby.

And um, I didn't miss Clayton.

And it just feels weird to see Jason Reitman getting nominated but not Juno. It's freaking Reitman! To have him along side of Coens, PTA, and Fincher...

Post subject:  Re: Chicago Film Critics Nominations

They could very easily match 4 for 5 in BP again, with a late comer (Sweeney Todd) replacing an early release (Once).

I REALLY REALLY hope the Leslie Mann Love doesn't end here.

Pretty please? :(

I think their Actress and Supporting Actor categories are what Oscar's are gonna look like.

Amen. More critics precursors please. I think she's looking good for a Globe nod as well.

Hopefully Apatow has many, many friends in the Academy.

Yeah I'm hoping a lot of this groups just haven't seen Sweeney Todd yet. Burton, Depp, and Carter have been pulling zilches.

Michael Clayton is probably getting a nom. Wowza. I'm pretty sure Ebert boosted it though, out of his many 4 star reviews Clayton got one of the most enthuiastic, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it high on his list.

WOW @ Michael Clayton. Probably the biggest surprise so far.

Amy Ryan and Blanchett are locked for BSA noms.

Not good for Atonement and really really not good for American Gangster.

I'd say American Gangster is pretty much a dead duck.

By the way, isn't it weird how Juno got a Best Director nomination but missed out on Picture? I don't know where the logic in that came from.

Hmm. Another great call by Rod. I think it was him who told us we shouldn't count it out a month or two back.

As it was predicted to be ;)
I don't know why I ever lost faith in my gut for that short while. This was never destined to go anywhere.

Finally some out of the field choices!!!!!

Leigh and Gosling! Woot! (specially Leigh, who seriously needs to be nominated for the Oscar ASAP)

Post subject:  Re: Chicago Film Critics Nominations

TWBB is getting closer and closer to a lock for a nom, and Atonement's old frontrunner position has more than faded away by now. Michael Clayton keeps chugging along, and I think the fifth spot would be between it and Juno...I do still think Juno'll get in for being the only comedy of the bunch.

so now:

1. No Country for Old Men
2. There Will Be Blood
3. Atonement
4. Sweeney Todd
5. Juno

6. Michael Clayton
7. Into the Wild
8. Gone Baby Gone
9. The Assassination of Jesse James
10. Charlie Wilson's War

I think it's almost narrowed down to only ten major contenders at this point.....unless we get a HUGE surprise nom, like Ratatouille, Diving Bell, The Savages, or....Zodiac?

oh, and American Gangster might still linger around just because it was such a BO hit and the names involved are oh so helpful.

I'd be very surprised if Clayton didn't get on at this point. It's pretty much excelling everywhere.

The Kite Runner is still in this thing. Its reviews have climbed back up to fresh, and I could see it showing up at BFCA tomorrow, and maybe even GG. It's a film that may only need to be in the 70% range at RT and MC (currently 69).

Remember, Sweeney Todd & There Will Be Blood both have had the disadvantage of having not been seen by everyone yet, even if they have been available for screenings. I think all the awards handed out a week or so from now and on will be true everyone-has-seen-everything awards
