 Re: LAFCA Predictions
Jeez, I forgot how awesome those wins were. Borat, Sheen (With Lopez as r/u!), random S. Actress win, Greengrass, LUBEZKI! Also, whoever wins Director here is pretty much locked to get a nom with Oscar. They're 29/32 since with wins-to-noms, are on a 17 year streak now that includes 3 of the last 5 lone directors (Lynch, Almodovar and Greengrass). I'll make predictions later.

 Re: LAFCA Predictions
The Coen Brothers will most likely win BD since they haven't been awarded in previous years plus this year's NBR loss.

 Re: LAFCA Predictions
I forgot Letters won here too last year. God, it really looked like another Evel Clint year in that first week, didn't it. Thank goodness a higher power stepped in.

 Re: LAFCA Predictions
I think either No Country or TWBB will win this. Whichever loses, will win NYFCC.

loyalfromlondon wrote: Mike, your post disappeared. But my reply was that any genre film in the race, animated, documentary, fantasy, or musical can only be helped by a BP win from LAFCA or NYFCC. A musical is automatically handicapped because no matter how good it may be, some people just don't dig musicals. So a BP win may help win some voters over. Yeah, I deleted it because I checked up NYFCC and they don't exactly have the greatest history of matching Best Picture either, although they are the better one to win (more aligned with Oscar's taste). Yeah, a win is a win, and always helps, you're right. Peace, Mike

Actor: Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises Dude, those would fuckin' rock. LAFCA is always good for random shit. Observe: 2006: Luminita Gheorghiu, The Death of Mr. (S. Actress) 2005: Vera Farmiga, Down to the Bone (Actress) 2003: Bill Nighy (S. Actor), American Splendor (Picture) The Triplets of Belleville (Animated Film) 2002: Edie Falco, Sunshine State (S. Actress) Apparently that springs from a weird process involving a different critic kicking off the nomination process for every category, who almost always gets his way. It's not the fairest route, but it's sure to make things v. interesting.

 Re: LAFCA Predictions
I wouldn't be surprised if one of Michael Clayton or The Bourne Ultimatum shows up in the top 2 categories, wonkiness taken into account.

 Re: LAFCA Winners Announcement
Yay! Go Amy Ryan!
She probably won't win the Oscar, but I'm pretty sure she'll get nominated at this point.

 Re: LAFCA Winners Announcement
Amy Ryan is starting out to be a real serious contender. Could very well spoil Blanchett's parade.
