I believe there's no thread for this.

What are the contenders?

Enchanted should dominate this category, IMO.

Agreed. I loved every song in Enchanted, especially "That's How You Know" and "So Close."

I also enjoy "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)" from Hairspray. It's conventional but good.

Umm...if Once doesn't get this....I fart in the academy's general direction.

They got this really wrong last year.

I think the only other awards bodies that award songs are the Globes, so don't expect much other input on this category.

Thing is, "Falling Slowly" is actually pretty in line with what they've been awarding this decade. Bob Dylan, two rap songs that were actually integrated into the film's plot, a foreign language song from a foreign language film, and a rally song from a documentary. Seeing as "Falling Slowly" is so close to the films heart, and Alan Menkin already has 8 Oscars (Seriously, go check), the only competition really is Into the Wild, a win that would closely resemble the win for The Motorcycle Diaries.

Or Clint could swing in and dominate THIS category too.

Ah yes, good ol' BFCA. They usually just mark down the buzziest songs, so expect some Once, Into the Wild, Enchanted and then some weird crap (Elizabethtown two years ago?).

If they can award It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp but not Falling Slowly... I don't know what I'll do.

If we were in the 80's still, the song from Transformers and Meet the Robinsons would be nominated.

Falling Slowly from Once should be in or else there will be hell to play. An Eddie Vedder song could get in. They'll probably nominate Marc Shaiman again after losing to Phil Collins. Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz most likely for the ballad So Close in Enchanted. Last slot is a toss-up. I'd like Once to become a double nominee so...

The AMPAS banned the mailing of CDs apparently. So instead, we get mini concerts for films like Once and Into The Wild.

I think that bodes well in their favor (Once and Into the Wild).

They repeat the Leno episode where Hansard and Irglova performed Falling Slowly (last week I think) and... :wub2:

Where have I heard "Falling Slowly" before?

I didn't see Once yet, but I know I've heard the song after listening to a sample on iTunes.

Have they played it somewhere else?

It's also been released as a single. The music video has been on VH1 many times

Grace is Gone from Grace is Gone

Don't underestimate THE CLINT!!

So, if he wrote the music, does he get the oscar if it wins best original song? Or does it go to the lyricist only??

Original Song goes to both musician/composer and the lyricist, so yeah Clint would get it.

Post subject:  Re: Best Original Song

I had a sneaking suspicion something from Music and Lyrics will be considered. I see that Enchanted did not submit the Carrie Underwood song... scared because it's an end credits montage song?

HAHA, the Transformers!!! That's the Goo Goo Dolls song, right?
As I type this, the song from Meet the Robinsons (Rob Thomas' Little Wonders) is playing over our work radio. Oh God, if that gets nominated.... ACK.

Haha, Good Luck Chuck actually submitted two songs!

I hope that one from Music & Lyrics makes it!

why were only 2 songs from "Once" eligible? My favorite one is "Lies" and some of the album's back-end songs are amazing.

I *think* they chose to submit those two songs only. AFAIK, all songs in the movie were eligible.

"Walk Hard" seems like a perfect choice for the Academy to pick for Best Song. It's a big part of the movie [since it's actually performed by the characters as part of the story], it's melodramatic, it's funny, and it's sung by an actor instead of a normal singer.

So my money's on Walk Hard's "Walk Hard" at the moment.

This would be in the tradition of folk parody, like the nominated song from A Mighty Wind.

It was brilliant for like, the first 15 seconds, and then became somewhat tedious. But still, that would be an amazing performance to see at the classy 'ol academy awards.

I'm rooting for Kate Bush and in case she doesn't get nommed, "That's How You Know".
