National Board of Review Countdown Thread
It's in 4 days and it's usually the first of the awards that really matters a bit each year. More often than not, the winner of Best Picture goes on to earn a BP nom. Last year it was pretty much the first indicator that Letters of Iwo Jima would take a BP spot.
So what are your predictions?
I say:
Best Film
No Country for Old Men
Other Top Ten Films (no order):
There Will Be Blood Charlie Wilson's War The Savages Gone Baby Gone Before the Devil Knows You're Dead Atonement Hairspray Juno American Gangster
Best Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Best Actress
Amy Adams (Enchanted)
Best Supporting Actor
Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men)
Best Supporting Actress
Marisa Tomei (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead)
Best Acting By An Ensemble
Atonement
Breakthrough Performance - Male
James McAvoy (Atonement)
Breakthrough Performance - Female
Ellen Page (Juno)
Best Director:
Ridley Scott (American Gangster)
Best Adapted Screenplay
No Country for Old Men
Best Original Screenplay
Juno
Best Foreign Film
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Best Animated Feature
Ratatouille

I see No Country for Old Men or Atonement for Best Film here. Gut feeling.

Re: National Board of Review Countdown Thread
So, have all the films been screened at this point?
It would be a great start for There Will Be Blood if it can manage it but it will probably go to No Country or Sweeney Todd. I can't see Atonement getting this for some reason.

Re: National Board of Review Countdown Thread
In recent history, winning Best Film at the NBR is both a blessing and a curse. Since the new millennium, the best film here will go on to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, but not WIN the Oscar. The past 6 years (since 2001), it has been that way. NBR Best Film Winners in past years:
2006: Letters from Iwo Jima 2005: Good Night, And Good Luck 2004: Finding Neverland 2003: Mystic River 2002: The Hours 2001: Moulin Rouge
Of course, it's not perfectly that way. The last film to win both the NBR and the Oscar for Best Film is American Beauty. Silence of the Lambs also won Best Film at the NBR in it's year (and as we know, went on to win the Oscar), so it's certainly possible that another bloody film (No Country for Old Men) could win this year and go on to win the Oscar.
My prediction for Best Film:
There Will Be Blood alt. Gone Baby Gone
There Will Be Blood seems to be a likely choice to me. Gone Baby Gone is just a gut feeling of mine as a possibility.
Peace, Mike

Re: National Board of Review Countdown Thread
No Country for Old Men seems like a good bet for them. It's a nice, middle-of-the-road choice for them in terms of the race. Though they were also responsible for making Moulin Rouge! and Iwo Jima into legit contenders, so they could also end up giving something that seems unlikely now a boost. Hairspray, perhaps?
I might make actual predictions later.

If there's a wacky winner, I wouldn't be surprised if it's The Kite Runner.
Realistically though, No Country for Old Men.

Realistically though, No Country for Old Men. I wouldn't either, but it strikes me as too much of a bust to actually win. A top ten placement seems right though (Blood Diamond, anyone?).

Re: National Board of Review Countdown Thread
I have a weird feeling that Tang Wei might win Best Actress.
And I'm not sure DDL will here. He will win NYFCC for sure (three time winner there).

Fingers crossed for Sweeney Todd, my biggest worry is that it may have been screened a little too late for it to be seriously considered.

Re: National Board of Review Countdown Thread
Remember last year's top ten 50% of their top ten films involved WB (Blood Diamond, The Departed, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, The Painted Veil) while 40% were from Fox (The Devil Wears Prada, The History Boys, Little Miss Sunshine, Notes on a Scandal)?
If they show the same corporate-allegiance this year, then Fox Searchlight's Juno, The Savages, Once, and The Darjeeling Limited and WB's Michael Clayton, The Assassination of Jesse James, The Bucket List all have a better-than-usual shot of making their top ten. Also, I think Sweeney Todd's international distribution is by WB.

Re: National Board of Review Countdown Thread
Is anyone thinking Amy Adams could win Best Actress here? Diane Keaton won NBR in 2003 for Something's Gotta Give (which was the first real indication she would be a serious awards contender for the movie).
Oh, and I changed my mind. I'm going to go out on a limb and say The Kite Runner wins Best Picture here. Another gut feeling of mine.

From AD forum: Quote: From some guy (Aguirre) at In Contention:
"[E]llen page will win the nbr's award for breakthrough. take that to the bank."
"[A]nd for reasons unbeknownst to me, the nbr is considering persepolis only in the animated category at the moment."
"AND the phil donahue doc. and no end in sight are the only docs that have a chance with them."
"marian cotilliard will win for la vie en rose."
"the kite runner will win best picture. hairspray wont be short-listed."
"my apologies for the consecutive posts... im done, now. but my guesses are as good as gold in this bizarre derby."
"kris, as the voting hasn't finished yet my predictions - despite my silly confidence - are simply very educated guesses. i will say that i know for certain that page's only competition for breakthrough is amy adams, that lake of fire has an absolutely ZERO percent chance of taking home the doc prize, that the members formed more of a consensus on kite runner and the acting in jesse james than anything else all year, and that the bit about persepolis is a clerical error that i don't believe they'll address by the time they vote. i think diving bell will take their foreign prize, and re: the savages... PSH / Laura Linney certainly have a shot - don't underestimate the former's very winning performance in charlie wilson's war."
"...sorry for all the input ,but it's not often i can write about these senseless year-end shenanigans with any confidence..."

Amy Adams for breakthrough? Didn't she already... break through?
NBR is a tough call. It's the first, plus it tends to reward (sometimes) the stuff with hype that dies later on. Remember stuff like... Gong Li for best supporting actress?

You would think getting an Oscar nomination already would be considered breaking through, yes. That's why if Amy Adams appeared anywhere on NBR, I figure it would be Actress, not Breakthrough.
