The passionate support is there stronger than precious few other films this year, and I think that it will start to snowball again when critic awards start to get released. It's a longshot maybe, but I'm going to say the Academy knows the best movie of the year when they see it. Anyone else? Y'know loyal if you join this I'll be even more tempted to get on the sexually transmitted diseases bandwagon of yours. |

Cinematography, Supporting Actor, and Best Song at least are guaranteed (pun maybe intended). It's too bad Hard Sun is a cover of a 90s pop song though. If this were 2006 it'd be a lock. We'll need at least three of the four biggies in December to get in for this to not make the cut. |

Still trying to iron out my predictions, but I'm seriously considering this. It has the kind of small but passionate fanbase that can get a movie far, and unlike say Once it has a pedigree (And an actor-turned-director, somthing they loooove). |

Obviously I'm in. Of the three categories BP, BD, and Adapted Screenplay, BD is actually the only category I don't think it's a lock at a nomination. He has a big voting bloc among actors that will help his BP cause and he will have the writer's support since he's actively supporting them during their strike. What isn't as clear is if he is has the respect of fellow directors, so I'd give him a 90% chance of getting nominated for BD rather than 99% for the two other categories. |

Definitely in. If it's not nominated, the Academy people are idiots. |

it has a..........15% chance at the moment. That could go up if it scores at some more critics awards, and it would absolutely NEED a Globe nom. |

After a dissapointing lack of love from various critic circles, Into the Wild finally struck gold by receiving seven nominations, the most of any film, from the well regarded Broadcast Film Critic Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Writer, and Best Song. It did miss out on Best Ensemble, but that's hardly reason to worry, as There Will Be Blood, Atonement, and Michael Clayton also missed out. |

I was really counting on the critics to show this a lot of love, but all that love seems to be headed toward NCFOM. Pity, since Into the Wild is the better movie (in my opinion, of course). It's still alive, but it's going to need to catch fire pretty soon here to have much of a shot. |

Keep in mind though, when praise gets lauded on actors-turned-directors, it's usually for the acting accolades they'll never get. (George Clooney was a weird example, but part of me thinks his win for Syriana was basically a the result of there being no room for director, and he was alongside a slate they didn't feel cofmortable awardiing) Sean Penn has actually directed an actress to a win, but I dunno, The Pledge got ignored, and that was with Jack Nicholson! I can't help but think he's too respected as an actor, in a weird way. Sarah Polly and Ben Affleck's directorial efforts feel like much more of an actor-turned director story. It's not out of the question, but it's just really a competitive year. |

http://www.awardsdaily.com/2007/12/stat ... e_wil.html Quote: Into the Wild has captured the hearts of voters in the Screen Actors Guild. No Country has serious legs. 3:10 to Yuma FINALLY gets some love and American Gangster is still in play. Atonement, Sweeney Todd and There Will Be Blood? Not so much. Into the Wild Leads both the SAGs and the BFCAs. This is significant because, especially in the case of the BFCAs, you are looking at a lot of people voting. It isn't twenty critics in a room, it's a ballot sent out to many members who separately agreed that they loved Sean Penn's film. The SAG nominating committee is a small percentage of the very large SAG membership. The entire membership (something like 90,000) votes for the winners. There Will Be Blood and Into the Wild seem to be appealing to two different bodies of voters. But the more mainstream tastes are leaning towards Into the Wild. It is an interesting race between the two. The Critics Choice and the SAGs have now both gone nuts for Into the Wild, which means, to me, it's in for Best Pic. It is still possible, in the 11th hour, that the AMPAS might not go for it but come on, who are we kidding. The actors make up the largest voting block in the Academy and what they really really REALLY like often pushes through. But it's more than that. Into the Wild is several things at once, just like No Country. It is not just one thing. It is a great leap forward for Penn as a director. It is well acted throughout. It is moving and ultimately uplifting and it is among the most beautifully filmed films of the year. When you watch the movie you feel like you are on the road with Chris McCandless. Penn's camera, as Hal Holbrook has said, gets right in there amid the trees and the wildlife. There does not even appear to be a fourth wall. On the other hand, people do have problems with the lead character. Many have exhibited a loss of patience with McCandless for being a "dumbass" in terms of confronting the wild. But the thing is, this point couldn't be more front and center in the movie. The kid's spirit is intact. But it is his realization about life (that, frankly, many of us old timers learn after years of having life kick us in the teeth) that is what makes the movie. You can't watch Into the Wild and think, oh, gee, maybe I'll go out there in Alaska without any weapons and command the wilderness. The plot, though, probably isn't what moves people about the film so much as the immediacy of it. Is it any wonder the actors went for it when this director in particular, like Clint Eastwood, Steven Soderbergh and the Coens, is so good with actors. Similarly, No Country for Old Men is many things at once. It is a career-best for the Coens, and in their career that is saying a lot, the best writing of the year hands down ("You can't stop what's coming. It ain't all waitin' on you. That's just vanity.") And the acting is brilliant across the board. What a relief to see Mr. Tommy Lee Jones at last awarded for his AMAZING performance in this film. There, I exclaimed. Even still, these SAG nominations don't move us any closer to the Best Picture lineup except to say that No Country is even stronger and is becoming too big to ignore. I don't see No Country not winning ensemble but I suppose anything is possible. Bware of Into the Wild. Am I crazy in thinking the movie could actually win Best Picture when all is said and done? Remember that the SAGs also picked Crash over Brokeback Mountain the year Crash won. The actors are the largest group in the Academy and what they like matters great deal. Yup, this is the type of film Hollywood just love. Doing their own thing and following their passion rather than following their parents and getting a "real-world" job. Adventuring into unknown territory with each new role while never staying put at one place for too long. Being surrounded by strangers who become like family. The contrast between naive idealism and harsy reality. Lonely and miserable at the end when no one pays attention to you anymore. This movie is a true metaphor for the actor's experience (and possibly other people in Hollywood like directors, screenwriters, etc). |

it's a pity this might end up with no major noms...it deserves to do better than American Gangster, at the least, and I'm sure that'll pick up one or two big noms. |

Here we go! Into the Wild is in a very safe position. The DGA showed its power. Atonement or Juno might upset Diving Bell, but not Into the Wild! |
