NBR is a tough call. It's the first, plus it tends to reward (sometimes) the stuff with hype that dies later on. Remember stuff like... Gong Li for best supporting actress?

It's in 4 days and it's usually the first of the awards that really matters a bit each year. More often than not, the winner of Best Picture goes on to earn a BP nom. So, have all the films been screened at this point? It would be a great start for There Will Be Blood if it can manage it but it will probably go to No Country or Sweeney Todd. I can't see Atonement getting this for some reason.

In recent history, winning Best Film at the NBR is both a blessing and a curse. Since the new millennium, the best film here will go on to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, but not WIN the Oscar. The past 6 years (since 2001), it has been that way. NBR Best Film Winners in past years: 2006: Letters from Iwo Jima 2005: Good Night, And Good Luck 2004: Finding Neverland 2003: Mystic River 2002: The Hours 2001: Moulin Rouge Of course, it's not perfectly that way. The last film to win both the NBR and the Oscar for Best Film is American Beauty. Silence of the Lambs also won Best Film at the NBR in it's year (and as we know, went on to win the Oscar), so it's certainly possible that another bloody film (No Country for Old Men) could win this year and go on to win the Oscar. My prediction for Best Film: There Will Be Blood alt. Gone Baby Gone There Will Be Blood seems to be a likely choice to me. Gone Baby Gone is just a gut feeling of mine as a possibility. Peace, Mike

No Country for Old Men seems like a good bet for them. It's a nice, middle-of-the-road choice for them in terms of the race. Though they were also responsible for making Moulin Rouge! and Iwo Jima into legit contenders, so they could also end up giving something that seems unlikely now a boost. Hairspray, perhaps? I might make actual predictions later.

I have a weird feeling that Tang Wei might win Best Actress. And I'm not sure DDL will here. He will win NYFCC for sure (three time winner there).

Remember last year's top ten 50% of their top ten films involved WB (Blood Diamond, The Departed, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, The Painted Veil) while 40% were from Fox (The Devil Wears Prada, The History Boys, Little Miss Sunshine, Notes on a Scandal)? If they show the same corporate-allegiance this year, then Fox Searchlight's Juno, The Savages, Once, and The Darjeeling Limited and WB's Michael Clayton, The Assassination of Jesse James, The Bucket List all have a better-than-usual shot of making their top ten. Also, I think Sweeney Todd's international distribution is by WB.
