Post VISUAL EFFCTS NOMINATION FOR OSCAR 2007
ok so those are the options.

Some of them I am sure won't be nominated are LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD becasue it is an action movie with tons of explosions and car and truck and fighter chases which if i am not mistaken is not hard stuff for a sfx company to do. SO i didn't put it in the option.

Now some will say why i added F4:ROTSS?? Because bulk of the sfx for silver surfer and some key action sequences are being done by WETA. They have 3-4 more sfx companies working on it but bulk of it will be done by WETA.

I loved 300's visual style but i think just like sin city it might not be nominated becasue everything is basically done on green screen so it all blends in well. But i still added it becasue it has some chances.

Movies that are not shot in full green screen areas but have tons of CGI and still look very realistic and blends in with the real environment are the ones that have good chances of being nominated.

Spider-man 3 i think won't be nominated because even though the action rocks and some of CGI looks amazing especially for sandman there is some stuff that looks downright too cartoony and not real enough. But it will be a miracle if it does.

POTC 3 has very good chances of being nominated.

Tranformers too has very good chances of being nominated

Harry potter 4 wasn't nominated even though it was better than prisoner of azkaban in terms of effects so i don't see order of pheonix being nominated. Not only that but i think the effects guys are now used to the sfx for these films and they aren't really challenging because they just have to show a lot of magical stuff popping from wands and stuff.

The golden compass will be nominated becasue it is the only big cgi winter flick.

Basically what i want u guys to do is tell the names of flicks that will be nominated for VFX category BUT only vote for the one u think has best chances of winning.

OOTP will have a tough time, unless the effects are amazing. I think it will have a better chance at best art direction, as the Potter sets are always top notch.

300, Transformers, Pirates 3.

Spider-Man 3 looked too much like a cartoon, FF4 2 looks inventive if it were made in '91. And Potter will be the odd man out. I know nothing of Golden Compass at this point though. Hopefully it'll replace 300.

It will be a battle between Transformers and Pirates, that's right my friends, a battle as old as time itself, Pirates vs Robots, all we need is now then a fim with Ninjas to sneak in and it will be perfect.

Pirates 3 (DMC did it, why not this?) and Spider-Man 3 are probably locks. Yes, some of SM3 was just "ok", but the Sandman, and the name will get it at least a nod.

Don't know about the third. OOTP has alot of F/X going on in the last 20 mins, but since Narnia beat GOF for the nod in 2005, I don't think this will get it.

Transformers? Maybe, I mean, Posiedon somehow got a nod last year >.<

Dont know about the Golden Compass. It has the budget usually needed (150M), but I'll wait for the trailer with Pirates 3 before having any opinion on it. None of the screenshots from the movie have shown anything F/X wise.

The third, imo, is down to OOTP, GP, and Transformers.

Its no contest. Transformers will win this easily. Its unique and not a sequel and looks damn good.

And it's about giant metal robots, which are considerably easier to animate than supposedly living things.

Spider-Man 3, Piates 3 and Transformers look really all like near-locks to me. Harry Potter is the dark horse for a nom. I thought the fourth film definitely deserved an effects nom, but it was snubbed in favor of the inferior Narnia...

Spiderman won't win again this year, I don't think the SFX was as seamless as SM2 even though there were cooler stuff.

Now here are my predictions:

Top 3:
* His Dark Materials
* Transformers
* Pirates of the Caribbeam 3

Next Best 3:
* Harry Potter 5
* Spiderman 3
* 300

I think this year it wil be His Dark Materials vs. Pirates 3, Transformers while up there won't have good reviews (which does count). I'll say Pirates 3 takes it again, making it the 2nd franchise to score back to back VFX Oscars after LOTRs

But DMC didnt have good reviews and it still won (deservingly).

So I think Transformers will do it over a sequel.

I'll guess:

1. Transformers
2. Pirates 3
3. 300

BTW - why do they only have 3 nominees in this category??

It's kind of a tradition, I guess, but they probably will change it to 5 nominees sometime soon, as they did with sound editing.

Spider-Man 3
At World's End
The Golden Compass

If Pirates 3 is a massive disappointment then Transformers.

If 5 noms add Transformers and 300.

Perhaps thats when there were fewer major effects films so 3 was enough. Hopefully they make it 5 noms soon. Just like animated!

Transformers looks to have the best effects as Pirates has been done before so they can reuse some effects from the second one, can't they?

As I said before Robots vs Pirates.

I am think ing Transformers since it is the "original" film (we have seen time and time and time and time again).

I'm doubting Pirates as they really didn't have anything new aside from the maelstorm finale, and the whole thing isn't getting nearly strong enough WOM to really take it. Wasn't What Dreams May Come the only film that was rotten on RT to win Visual Effects in a looong time?

Transformers (winner)
Pirates 3
300/Golden Compass

No way Spider-man gets nominated if they actually look at the effects and not just the name of the movie.

Hmmm... so I guess Die Hard 4 is also a contender somehow...? (though it'll have a better shot in the sound categories, I can only assume)
