Did the close proximity of Norbit to voting time, cost Murphy the Oscar? Yes, he's gotten richer, but was this all speculation, or could it have had an effect? |

He was a fool to release that crap so close to oscars and several sites were teaming up to make sure he does not win. Like that asshole jeffrey wells. |

Norbit played a very minor role in the whole affair, in my opinion, and so did the sites which "teamed up" against him. Oscar voters don't really read or care about stuff like that. It was mostly a lack of support for Dreamgirls coupled with Alan Arkin being a well respected veteran who was nominated twice beforehand(but never won) in a movie that was nominated for Best Picture(and thus had more support than Dreamgirls). |

Norbit wasn't the problem, his earlier career was. Actors who change to serious roles just don't get credit from the academy. Look at Jim Carrey or Sharon Stone. They won the Globe, but the Academy didn't reward them as well because of Dumb and Dumber, Sliver et al. |

I don't think Norbit helped matters but it didn't cost him the Oscar either. It all comes down to that people really do not like him personally so why would they vote for him? Also, leaving right after losing isn't going to help matters. |

Releasing Norbit and it's ad campaign during the Oscar voting probably did hurt his chances -- I bet it was a very close vote. Nobody needed reminding of all Murphy's stinkers just then. Lately he'd been keeping his head down, with just the well-received voice work in Shrek. But, I suppose it was trade-off -- extra BO for Norbit because of the Oscar buzz. I wonder if he would trade the extra Norbit $$$ he made for the Oscar? |

I think Murphy hurt Murphy; not Norbit necessarily. Peace, Mike. |

I don't belive Norbit is any factor in Eddie's losing. The support behind Arkin had been building for a while, especially with all the momentum LMS had during the guild season. |

I don't think Murphy was scheduled to sing the Dreamgirls song. It is actually very common for celebrities to leave award shows early. Early presenters like Daniel Craig and Tom Hanks probably left as soon as they finished presenting. By the time the Best Picture is presented, the celebrities left are mostly award winners, those who appeared in a best picture nominee, or celebrities who wish to engage in post-show red carpet media fests or afterparties. Otherwise, celebrities usually leave before the show ends after fulfilling their appearance obligations to avoid crowd traffic and media attention. This is why award shows have hundreds of seat-fillers on hand. |

Yeah, but Murphy got up and left right after he found out he didn't win. DiCaprio never has done that in the multiple times he has lost. |

Yeah. Murphy was good in Dreamgirls. But better than Arkin and the rest? Not really. Of the four acting categories - I always thought this was the one that wasnt locked up. I dont think Norbit hurt his chances. Though it didnt help. Signing up for Starship Dave probably wont help much either. |

I really do think he might've won if not for Norbit. |

I happened to read the Daily News' Jack Matthews' pre-Oscar analysis today and sure enough, he said something along the lines that Murphy may have been doing well earlier in the year, but he would probably lose because Norbit reminded all the voters of all the crappy films Murphy has done... he then predicted Alan Arkin to win. |

I know that he would've lost my vote over Norbit, and he would have had it otherwise too. It's not that it looked simply bad, it looked flat out atrocious and all the marketing centered on Murphy parading around in fat suit drag, something even Tyler Perry had apparently given a rest. Sure there were other factors that helped Arkin like the increased support in LMS and decreasing support in Dreamgirls but I have no doubt Norbit absolutely did hurt. |

Just like I wrote a few weeks ago.... Quote: I think Murphy's lack of taking chances in his career will affect him, honestly, the guy never did an Adam Sandler or Robbin Williams just maybe star in a few indie/small films, he's always been Mr. Hollywood, never wanting to go for broke in a role, show some true acting chops (which the guy obviously has) instead he's gonna be in freakin Norbit. Dont know if people have enough respect for him in Hollywood to hand him the oscar, will be close. |

It might've hurt but WHY? I do understand how it's a reminder for all his lame movies, but still!! If you're rewarding someone for a role, you shouldn't look at the rest of his career.. If you do good, you should be appreciated even if u havent been that good!! loyalfromlondon wrote: it was meant to be this picture wouldnt have worked with 3 blacks ![]() Is this what YOU think? He could have atleast waited for Jen Hudsons category and the Dreamgirls songs. |

What Levy and xiayun said. I predicted Arkin to win anyway. Someone like Murphy doesn't win as a first-time nominee, really. LMS kept building its monumentum more and more and with a cast as praised as LMS' they were ought to award someone from it... Too bad they didn't do the same to Sideways which was superior to LMS anyway. |

Didn't he publicly diss the Academy for being racist 20 years ago? That'll come back to haunt you.......... |
