Yeah, it was nominated for best foreign film two years ago, and thus made it ineligible for any other categories in subsequent years. That's one reason why Miramax delayed it for so long. Their initial strategy is to push it for Oscar, a.k.a City of God, but then suddenly it was nominated for best foreign film in Feburary of 2003 before they could release it in the states. Remember, Hero was premiered in China on December of 2002, so there was no way Miramax could've released it in time for the 2003 awards. Without any awards prospect, the available marketing strategy was gone until it could attach Quentin's name with it. |

Yeah, and it actually helps Yimou and HOFD in a certain way. In a lot of top 10's, people are mentioning Hero and HOFD side-by-side. Some like Hero but not HOFD, and some enjoy HOFD over Hero, and if both groups are pushing for Yimou, all the better. ![]() |

Actually, I think it was good, if not great marketing strategy. It wouldn't have made any more (but could have made less) had it been released any earlier. I guess its bad in terms of it getting any recognition at the Oscars, if you feel it desrves it, but as far as the box office and all, I don't really get what all the fuss is about. It's a foreign martial arts film. Not all can do as well as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon did. People should know that. Kill Bill did around $60 million at the box office. Did people really expect better for this? Why? |

Well, I think it deserves more regognition at the Oscars - but I'm still happy with the domestic gross ($50m+ is quite good for a movie with $31m production costs)). |
