So, most people around here already know my opinion on the film and its chances. For the last while I've been maintaining that the film has a good chance of being nominated, and is not in the "0%, absolutely no way!" category most people agree with. I've even considered predicted it will be nominated, because of the position it is in.

So, I'm going to make this my all-out, risky prediction of the year:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year. Based on critics lists, it clearly hasn't been forgotten (#2 of the year in terms of amount of lists it's on, with many #1's on the lists). It made a good enough amount at the box office, is very well received, and has extra support from raves for Kate Winslets performance in the film and the wonderful screenplay from Kaufman. The film also got a lot of support at the Globes.

So, yeah, go ahead and tear me apart. That's my prediction, and either I'll be served crow pie when the nominations come out, or I'll be gloating like there's no tomorrow. ;)

PEACE, Mike ;)

I'm totally with you man, I think it has a really strong chance to get a Best Picture nomination, and I'm willing to eat crow if it doesn't. :)

I would love to see it happen (I love the film more and more every time I look back on it), but I just can't jump on the bandwagon here. Yes, I think the critics' lists will give it a boost, but I don't believe that boost will be big enough to surpass both Hotel Rwanda and Finding Neverland (the two iffys).

Prove me wrong, though, Academy. Prove me wrong.

Well technically, it woudl only have to do better then one of them, wouldn't it? Or are you thinking something besides MDB, Aviator and Sideways is a lock? :)

Oops. I guess my italicized conjunction should have been or.

Even though that doesn't really make sense anymore. Oh well. Nevermind.

Eternal Sunshine is my number one film of the year, if such ranking exists or matters.

I would easily give it a best picture nom and a win.

I, however, would NOT give it a direction nom. The strength of the film is the mostly the power of the script and the actors, not the direction.

It's hard to see sometimes... I dunno.

And the Golden Globes might have seen that, hence less nominations than other films.

It would be the surprise of the night, and a wonderful one if it won the Golden Globe for best picture, comedy or musical. Though The Incredibles is one of the best reviewed films of the year, and a very successful one at the box office, I think it's gonna be like last year (Finding Nemo) where despite that it won't be able to overcome the other films' momentum to win the award, and unless they really gon isane, Phantom of the Opera won't win. Ray? Hmmm...that's a hard one cause it's really a drama competing with true comedies and Phantom. But I'sd still put Eternal Sunshine at #2 for the win.

I don't know if everything so far will lead to a best picture nomination, but I think it's very possible (compared to impossible, like some people are saying, which I fail to understand why.)

Remember, at this point last year (and to a certain extent all the way up to right before nominations were anounced) Cold Mountain was considered a lock, so even though we have all these "locks" in the race, any one of them could still fall behind (and even though some films are doing great so far, Sideways with critics for example, it doesn't necessarily mean much, once Guild Awards begin to be announced I think at least one film WILL fall behind in the race), and any one film could still surprise (no, not Alexander ). I'm willing to bet that either Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Minds OR Fahrenheit 9/11 WILL be nominated. I'm not sure which one I'm more confident about, but one of the two. Mark my words :P

My best picture list of contenders:

1. The Aviator (ehhhhh, I'm not sure I'd go as far as to put it at #1, but..)
2. Million Dolla Baby
3. Finding Neverland
4. Sideways
5. Hotel Rwanda

6. Fahrenheit 9/11
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
8. Closer
9. Ray
10. Kinsey

Yeah, I think so too. Clearly it has not been forgotten. I have it on the #4 slot for nominations.
