Peter O'Toole Love Train- You Can Do It You Sly Old Fox!
It would be a crime if Peter O'Toole, one of the greatest screen actors and grand alcoholics of the last 45 years, does not finally win. And it looks like he won't. I am deeply saddened.
It doesn't help that Venus hasn't really been released yet.
But two positives: Venus is finally getting out there. Not just that, but he is finally in the US campiagning. He was hilarious on Letterman last night, sharing stories about how he and old drinking buddy Peter Finch ("Finchy") bought a bar one drunken evening, after being cut off by the bartender. Luckily for them, the bartender didn't cash the checks. He also told of the story of the epitaph he hopes to (eventually) have on his tombstone. Once, he sent a shirt to a dry cleaners ("Covered in blood and Guinness...the usual stuff."). They returned the shirt soon, however, emblazed with the following note: "We are deeply saddened to return work that is unfinished." Or something like that. It was hilarious.
He didn't look good though; he could barely walk. And he seemed out-of-it, but in a really funny, ingratiating way...I suspect a heavy dose of painkillers. I hope he'll be ok.
O'Toole will also be on The Daily Show tonight, Thursday. The Envelope says he'll also be on The View tomorrow, and a smattering of other places.
Xenu willing, Peter O'Toole will walk out of the Shrine Autitorium with a competitive statue of his own.
This thread is for any news/praise/or even seriously-misguided-and-idiotic-criticism of one brilliant motherfucker.

O'Toole is the thing I'm cheering for over anything else in any other category this year, by a country mile.

Hey, this sounds just like the campaign they rolled out for O'Toole 25 years ago for My Favorite Year...
(Never been a fan of this guy's overacting thang.)

I hope the glorious Irish drunk comes up trumps.

bradley, I hope you didn't just knock My Favorite Year, a damn near perfect little movie.
I mean, you're entitled to your opinion and all that other jazz that defends bad taste, but Jesus Christ.

Well if Geraldine Page can win her first Oscar after 8 nominations, I'm pretty sure Peter O'Toole can as well.

I agree, the academy will definetly give sympathy votes to O Toole. If not, he will be the all time loser, but the Academy doesn't want that to happen.

O'Toole really needed to show his face at the Globes tonight, he could've really used that Jack/Clint/Beatty old timers screentime, which was packed on hugely tonight. At this point I think nobody knows about his film and not many have seen it, the buzz has died.
3 6 Mafia - 1 Oscar
Cuba Gooding Jr. - 1 Oscar
Peter O'Toole - 0 Oscars.

Well, I have to say my faith in O'Toole is a little wavering, even though I predicted all along Whitaker would take GG. It's not because he wasn't present, but because of Forest's acceptance speech. He may just have won the Oscar right there.

That's exactly how I felt, except I think he's had Best Actor locked up for some time. If O'Toole was going to win anywhere, it would have been the Golden Globes. Of course maybe the movie will get some last minute buzz if it finally gets released in more then a handful of theaters, but The Last King of Scotland's expansion is going to do exactly the same. The Forest Whitaker who gave that speech and the Forest Whitaker in that film couldn't have been more different, and anyone who sees the film after watching the Globes will think that right off the bat.
