Lots of Little Miss Sunshine and Half Nelson love. Loyal is gonna LOVE these.

And the Paul Dano love makes me

Something I find interesting though is that, outside of Little Miss Sunshine, these are very low-key nominees, especially after awarding Brokeback Mountain last year and Sideways the year before.

Whoa, they nominated a Philippine-made indie!!!

Veeeery interesting sup. actor nominees. Paul Dano (instead of Steve Carell - guess they don't consider him indie enough, eheh), Daniel Craig, ... and Channing Tatum!!! lool Cool.

And Soderbergh got nominated for Bubble!

Really good for Little Miss Sunshine and specially Half Nelson, which seems to be headed for at least oscar nominations for Gosling and Screenplay (maybe Shareeka Epps, who knows...)

I also noticed the lack of real oscar contenders this year. The cerimony won't be as big (in terms of media exposure) as last year's I think. The only people with a chance: Ryan Gosling, Edward Norton, Alan Arkin, Shareeka Epps and Catherine O'Hara (very slim for these two).

With The Queen, Little Children, and The Last King of Scotland being ineligible, the options are pretty limited for ISA, and I'm happy to see the low-key films getting recognized; more in line with the spirit of awarding real independent film-making.

The Painted Veil did fine, but no Naomi Watts.

I think it's retarded to nominate LMS and HN in Best First Screenplay instead of Best Screenplay, especially considering they're nominated in Best Feature, not Best First Feature. Can't have it both ways.

Surprised that Sherrybaby and Maggie Gyllenhaal were snubbed.

And was there a child actor category, or was Abigail Breslin also ignored for Little Miss Sunshine?

What?! No Hard Candy?!!!!

Yep. No Hard Candy, Little Children, Breslin for Little Miss Sunshine, Last King of Scotland (Whitaker in particular), Sherrybaby (Gyllenhaal in particular), Come Early Morning (Judd in particular), ...

lots of omissions...

I think I read somewhere that The Last King of Scotland and Little Children didn't qualify, for some reason. And

However, the Breslin and Sherrybaby snubs are quite odd.

Tom O'Neill from goldderby wrote:
Meantime, "The Queen," "Venus," "Last King of Scotland," "The History Boys" and "Borat" didn't qualify because their filmmakers or production companies are based in Britain. There is the separate category for foreign films, but they didn't pop up there. Other films like "Little Children" and "Bobby" didn't qualify because they didn't fit all four criteria cited by Film Independent, which bestows the prizes: 1. Uniqueness of vision; 2. Original, provocative subject matter; 3. Economy of means (with particular attention paid to total production cost and individual compensation); 4. Percentage of financing from independent sources. Nominees were determined by a panels of 15 filmakers (directors, writers, actors) and journalists. Also, films must be made for less than $20 million; 250 qualified for entry.

Hmmm, ok...

and yet they nominated The Painted Veil with its 35 million budget. Nothing against that movie - I'm quite curious about it, actually. I just see a double standard in here, that's all.

True. Actually, I remember when the budget limit was lower than now, yet Greek Wedding was nominated, and critics griped about that.

Well, the budget for that was $5M, so it did qualify. They were probably mad they went for something so big.

I'm so glad Abigail Breslin was snubbed for her incredibly overrated performance in Little Miss Sunshine! She was better in Signs! I truly hope LMS doesn't receive a Best Picture nomination. It's so undeserving. I wish The Illusionist had the buzz LMS has.

Anyways, it's too bad Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sherrybaby were ignored, but woo-hoo about The Illusionist being recognized!
