Eastwood Could Make The Worst Film And Still Win An Oscar...
At this point, I'm fully convinced that Hollywood and the Academy love Clint Eastwood so much, that he could make the shi**iest film in Hollywood and STILL win BEST PICTURE for it.. What makes Flags of our Father's so much better than say, PLATOON, HAMBURGER HILL or even FULL METAL JACKET??? I think at this point, if you've seen 1 War movie you've seen them all.. I'd be extremely surprised if Eastwood wins BEST PICTURE for this much less get's a Nomination for the catagory and if he does, it's because he's Clint Eastwood and very beloved.. Flame away.. I dig him as much as the next person, but come on..

Wait...don't you contradict yourself there?!
First you say that you are convinced that the Academy loves Eastwood so much that he'll win no matter what he makes.
And THEN you say that you'll be extremely surprised if he wins Best Picture or even gets a nom.
That doesn't make any sense, BKB!

It does make sense, but stop and take a deep breath before dismissing this cause I posted it.. I say that I'll be extremely surprised if Eastwood get's a Nomination for this cause it's like the guy can simply do no wrong in Hollywood and this movie Flag of our Father's looks to be simply another War movie told from 1 Man's perspective of it and no better than any of the other War movie's made over the year's.... With that having been said, I'd say since Eastwood made this, it's a sure thing with the Academy and if it were anyone else other than Clint Eastwood making this, this wouldn't even get noticed probably or paid very little attention..

Clint did make the worst film ever- The Gauntlet.
It brought him no awards.

There really isn't anything memorable from this film except for maybe the old photos shown at the end of the film for me. I don't think it compares to SPR, Platoon or FMJ.

Oh yeah.. It's gonna win alright.. I'll tell ya right now, the Academy will eat this movie up cause Clint Eastwood Directed it and chances are, he'll either get BEST DIRECTOR or BEST PICTURE out of this and if it were anyone elose other than Clint, this movie would be forgotten quickly.. Come March, they'll be giving this the Ra-Ra treatment for the Oscar campaigning boost..

Glad to see you in this forum BKB, and rooting on Flags. I don't agree, though. It's Scorcese's year. It's been his year ever since Jack Nicholson signed on the dotted line. If Eastwood would have went with Tobey Maguire, Al Pacino, Richard Dreyfuss, and two more big name stars, instead of a basically unknown cast, it would have had a better chance, and I still think Marty would have come away with the victory.

I don't know if it is Marty's year for sure yet (although Departed is definately way in the lead at the moment, as I see it - still have to wait for more films to be released though, like Dreamgirls). But I don't see Eastwood winning this year. And it's not because he's not good, but it'll be because of a surrounding number of factors, including the fact that Flags is not gaining as great of reception in general by the critics. He's made some great films though, and has a few Oscars now under his belt. Flags just isn't his greatest accomplishment, and frankly, I think Paul Haggis is a lot at blame here. I've never thought Haggis was good, at all. I wish Eastwood was unattach himself from Haggis.
PEACE, Mike.
