Marty, Dreams Do Come True

The dust has settled on the 79th annual Academy Awards and 3 divas and 1 divo were left standing. The critically acclaimed musical Dreamgirls won the top prize, while also winning Oscars in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories (Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson). Dreamgirls which was nominated for 13 Oscars, won a total of 7 (Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Actress, Song, Sound, Art Direction, Costume).

Martin Scorsese proved that the sixth time was the charm as the perpetual award bridesmaid finally took home Best Director for his Boston crime epic The Departed. The film was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning a total of 3 (Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Editing).

A pair of veteran actors with a combined filmography spanning over 100 years won Best Actor and Actress. Peter O’Toole, no stranger to losing at the Oscars, finally won Best Actor after 7 losses (take that Marty) for his portrayal of a veteran actor facing his final curtain call. Helen Mirren, who swept the pre-Oscar awards, won Best Actress for her stunning turn as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

Clint Eastwood’s WWII drama Flags of our Fathers, won awards in 3 of the 11 categories for which it was nominated (Best Cinematography, Sound Effects Editing, Score). Indie powerhouse Little Miss Sunshine, nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture, won only one, for Best Original Screenplay.

First time Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres received wide praise for her opening monologue that poked fun at Hollywood, fast food, small dogs, reality tv, and Japanese business men.

Loyal, is there a reason you're obsessed with Dreamgirls?

For the record, that would explain my Kinky Boots love and to a lesser degree, The Crying Game since Jaye is biracial.

I could actually see this happening.

It would make for a quite boring Oscar season, though. :nerd:

Dreamgirls is Chicago with black people. No way Eddie takes the Oscar from Forest or Jack. And Jennifer Hudson was on American Idol for Christ's sake. SHe'll never win an Oscar.

I don't see LMS in the race this year at all. Other than the indie comedy thing, it's strong reviews card is getting squashed by The Queen, United 93, and The Departed.

I dont get how a movie about gay cowboys couldnt pull off a win, but flaming homoerotic films like Chicago and Dreamgirls can.

I can't believe you missed such a blatant opprotunity for a Lord of the Rings joke.
