Little Miss Sunshine = This Year's As Good As It Gets
In 1997, As Good As It Gets was nominated for 7 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Score, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay). It went on to win for Best Actress and Best Actor.
I can see Little Miss Sunshine having a similar Oscar run, with 5 nominations. Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. There's also the chance of a 6th nomination, again for Best Supporting Actor.
There are some differences between the films. As Good As It Gets had a prime Xmas release date. It also had the strength of a previous BP winning director (Terms of Endearment) and of course, Jack Nicholson. Little Miss Sunshine should gross about half, if not more, of As Good As It Gets domestic box office.

I would love that.
Little Miss Sunshine may be my favorite dramedy since my all-time favorite movie As Good As It Gets, with the possible exception of Sideways.

I loved it, but I don't see it. Jack Nicholson being attached goes a lot further than anything Little Miss Sunshine offers. I see a screenplay and supporting nom or two at best. I definitely wouldn't mind being wrong, though.

If anything, LMS is this year's Sideways.

Not really.
Little Miss Sunshine's cast and story is reminiscent of As Good As It Gets. Sideways is the little indie that could, whereas LMS is having a more direct run.

Their runs are not that distinct from each other...with the difference that LMS simply bears a bit more wide appeal.

LMS has a 1000x the appeal of Sideways.

But it was also released further away from the awards season than Sideways and obviously MUCH further away than As Good as It Gets.

I'm pretty sure its release date was the first difference I pointed out.

It was more referring to Sideways, though. Sideways might have had less appeal, but its gross still won't be too easy to reach for LMS (even though it eventually might) because it won't be able to enjoy the full-blown awards support.

That would be awesome, but I'm not holding out any hope. Screenplay and a supporting nomination would be more than enough for me, but I would love more.

I would love to see it, but I'm just never felt Little Miss Sunshine in the race. I see an Eternal Sunshine situation, where it gets top 3 of the year reviews, an acting nomination or 2, and wins best screenplay, but nothing more. Too early, too indie, too comedic and lovable, and it's got 2 directors.

Those of you thinking it is too "small"...it'll make more than Crash made at the box-office. I see $65 milion locked up at this point.

Little Miss Sunshine = This Year's As Good As It Gets
If by that, you mean this year's most over-rated mess of a movie, well, I strongly disagree.
Little Miss Sunshine was great!!!

Now it's better.
It has a chance to pass Brokeback too, though.
