For some strange reason, we don't seem to have a thread like last year's where we made our own "nominations" based on movies we saw this year.

Give it a tryyyy.

I have a couple I feel strongly about.

United 93, Best Picture
Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water), Best Actor
Bryce Dallas Howard (Manderlay), Best Actress
Maggie Gyllenhaal (World Trade Center), Best Supporting Actress

I'm thinking Howard and Giamatti probably won't stay in my top 5, but so far, they're the two best performances I've seen this year.

Only United 93 and Little Miss Sunshine are eligible on my list and worthy of nominations.

And Denzel for Inside Man... he wasn't bad!

I guess I'll just post this in this thread.

My fantasy football draft is over, so for the next few days, I'm going to study my butt off on what's coming up and give a detailed analysis of this year's awards season before September 1st if anybody's interested.

From what I've seen, I like Lib's list... Gong Li needs attention for her fantastic performance in Miami Vice, though. I'd also alternate Michael Mann for Oliver Stone, since I haven't seen WTC in its entirety.

Unfortunately for Gong, it looks like her chances went down the toilet with the movie :(

Unfortunately indeed.

I firmly believe she deserves recognition for Vice, or at least considering the year thus far. She should be nominated if only to make up for her lack of attention in earlier years.

Gong Li wasn't that great in Miami Vice.

Miami Vice deserves a cinematography nom and likely a win. I doubt I'll see better camera work this year.

Disagree on the first count (she isn't outstanding, but strong and deserving for her overlooked career - from what little I have honestly seen from her). I'm not going to get passionate about this because I have a very fragmented view of her career and haven't seen but a handful of her films. Still, she's been getting praise long enough. I do agree she has little chance; this is just my personal choice.

And we've already agreed over the first... think Vice actually has a shot at a nomination?
