The guy might've been snubbed big time with no Emmy nod for his role on The Shield, but he's getting a best actor nod for his role as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the film The Last King of Scotland. I just felt like making this thread now, so I can be the first one to have mentioned Whitaker getting a nod for best actor

Film is opening limited on September 26th.

Quote:
In an incredible twist of fate, a Scottish doctor (James McAvoy) on a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly entangled with one of the world's most barbaric figures: Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker). Impressed by Dr. Garrigan's brazen attitude in a moment of crisis, the newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first flattered and fascinated by his new position, he soon awakens to Amin's savagery, and his own complicity in it.

Yeah, a lot of sites have been buzzing about Whitaker for a while now. I think he's likely for a nom. and even a win. He's a hard-working actor and director that's been around for a while. We all know playing a real person helps, even if it's someone like Amin.

I would love to see Whitaker win. I have admired his work since he was in Fasstimes.

This sounds like an interesting film!

It'll probably be too small scale. Whitkaer deserved at least a nom for his role in Ghost Dog, though.

I like Whitaker but if this role is anything like the real Amin it will be too gorey to get him a nomination. If they do it like a play though, with the worst stuff off camera and just talked about, then he might get noticed.

Looks like this is gonna be reality now. Should be the favorite going in. His performance could be the reason why the film ends up getting a best picture nod, similar to Capote & Ray. If the film doesnt end up with a nomination, then he'll most likely have a slim chance of actually winning.

With a lack of actors playing real-life characters this year, he's a good bet to get a nod. He's long overdue (he's never even gotten a nomination before) and there's really no one standing out this year in Best Actor.

I saw the preview, and he looked absolutely ferocious.

I see him getting a nomination as well.

Plus he works as a director as well. That should help also. I actually can see this movie being a player in the best picture race as well. Like Hotel Rwanda could have been with more time.

Saw the trailer yesterday before Idlewild. He's the only 100% lock for a nom I've seen yet this year. And that, just from the trailer!

That good?

Maybe I'm just cynical because he has been overlooked for so long.

I suppose he has a strong shot... liked him in the trailer (but not the trailer).

Yep, he is a lock and right behind O'Toole for the win at the moment.

I just can't imagine that the Academy rolls out an Oscar for an actor playing a evil ruthless dictator. EVEN counting the fact he's black. Maybe a nod but a win just isn't gonna happen.

They've given oscars to evil characters before. Hannibal Lecter, for one.

I know Lector was gonna be brought up but that film had lots of support overall. This LKOS I see having maybe just that one nod. A charity or token nod for the film. I can't see a win like for DW win for Training Day as that was a career win.

If O'Toole gets the nom (which will likely happen), everyone's out anyway.
