YOUNGER VOTERS INVITED TO OSCAR CLUB
Thursday, July 6 2006

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has often been accused of being an old-man's club that is out of touch with the sensibilities of young filmmakers, has invited 120 actors, directors, producers, composers and other young industry members to fill the vacancies of those who have died or retired. Among those invited to join the group that hands out the Oscars each year is the 12-year-old actress Dakota Fanning. Others include actors Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Dolly Parton, Keira Knightley and Rachel Weisz; German director Werner Herzog; composer Dario Marianelli; producer Cathy Shulman; screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière; and Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki.

Fanning is WAY too overrated at this point now...

No Academy member will sponsor you just by appearing in a deleted scene from The Birdcage as "Dianne Wiest's Stuntdouble"

I thought everyone who has been nominated is already a part of the academy?

It just makes it easier for you to get invited. You still have to get members to endorse and recommend you and stuff. It's kind of like a glorified fraternity.

Lol, it would be funny if 12 year old dakota had to see a film like Y tu mama tambien, and you know she's giving charlottes web a vote now.
:hahaha:

Maybe that's what I was thinking...but they did invite Rachel Weisz and not the other three, unless they just weren't mentioned or are already members?

They must not, because Miyazaki would have been in the Academy already.

I think that's pretty sucky, I think if you get a nomination you should at LEAST be able to vote for yourself that year. And I think if you win you should be let in automatically.

Academy Awards
Academy membership may be obtained by a competitive nomination (however, the nominee must be invited to join) or a member may submit a name. The Academy does not publicly disclose its membership, although past press releases have announced the names of those who have been invited to join. If a person not yet a member is nominated in more than one category in a single year, he/she must choose which branch to join when he/she accepts membership

I wanted to start a thread on the following and maybe still will but thought I'd post it in here for now...

Don't knwo if anyone mentioned it yet, but along with the new invitations to the academy were some snubbed invitations as well. I thought anyone who was nominated for an academy award (especially in the acting categories) is automatically invited to be a member. I guess that's not so.

Michalle Williams was nominated for an Academy Award this year amd yet, the Academy decided not to send her an ivnvitation to join the academy because, apparently, her body of work didn't say too much yet and they're rather picky of who they choose.

And then they go and invite Dakota Fanning :|

I'm actually appauled by this action or lack thereof. :disgust:

Also of important note... Jennifer Tilly became an Academy member after being nominated for Bullets Over Broadway. And she doesn't have the most impressive of resumes before that.

It's really all politics, what it comes down to, aside from someone's extensive body of work. Jennifer Tilly's older sister Meg Tilly probably had some clout to get her invited. Jake Gyllenhaal had his whole clan (most notable is his mom, an Academy Award nominated screenwriter) probably back him up.
