Post subject:  WOKJ "BP Nominees" Club Pick #3: Quiz Show

It was a tight race between this film and The Right Stuff, but at the end Robert Redford's drama Quiz Show got the edge.

In the following OI ask you to get hold of this film (through borrowing, buying, renting...whatever works), watch it and PLEASE discuss it in this thread before the deadline.

Deadline: Sunday, June 4th

After that date, we'll move on with the next pick.

Hmm, I haven't seen this in over ten years. I'll rewatch it if I have time. I just remember Ralph Fiennes giving a good, but not great performance.

Quiz Show was a good movie. Not great, but good. Paul Scofield and John Turturro give the best performances, and my favorite scenes are the ones between Van Doren and his dad...the scene where he tells his dad taht he was fed the questions was awesome. I'll post more onec everyone else gets a chance to watch it.

I don't know if I'll get to watching it since I don't have Netflix now.

I'll check the library, though.

I'll be getting it this week.

Sorry I didn't take part in the one for The Apartment. I was a little busy, and I don't know, I think I did vote for it, but no one here who checked it out really raved, so I couldn't get too excited about it.

I might not have the time to revisit it now, but I remember liking it when I saw it a few years ago and being impressed by John Turturro's performance, but it just wasn't one of those movies that have stuck with me since I watched it (and I'm one of the few who loved Redford's The Legend of Bagger Vance)...

I thought Baggar Vance was a decent movie. But it pales in comparison to Quiz Show. Mostly because Legend is ultimately an uplifting story where "man does good," whereas Quiz Show is just an incredibly alarming probe at celebrity consumption and personal doubt.

I won't put that in question - Legend is cleary uplifting (even though I might be pratically alone with this idea, I think Redford does a much better job than Howard did with Cinderella Man) and it doesn't try to raise any political issues..

Quiz Show is much more "important" in that way..

OMG! Dolcevita's treasure hunt thing distracted me!

What I remmeber most from this movie is thinking that they kind of messed up in their period detail by making it look too glamourous. Not saying it was a bad movie, it was pleasant, just that was what stood out.

Liked it, didn't love it.

It's really entertaining and accessible, but I felt it didn't carry a lot of dramatic weight. Despite a crackling first half, the ethical dilemma the film proposes, basically whittled down to a what would you do?-type thing, felt too simplistic for me to admire the film for its overall themes. I think it also loses something in failing to maintain a true central character: Are we supposed to be connecting with Van Doren, or with Goodwin? It seems a bit convoluted to say both, and the film gets a bit murky in attempting to juggle sympathy for both.

Redford's skill is evident, though. Strong performances, too.

I'd give it a B.

Good pick, though, guys. I'm glad I got to see it.

Eh, I still haven't finished it. I was at the scene where Goodwin asks Van Doren if he really did cheat... this following Van Doren's loss when the disk starting messing up. Turns out it is pretty trashed and I can't finish it....

So, anyone care to spill the beans? What happens?
