Nice to see Kinsey and Sideways keep gaining profile. I predict Paul Giamatti, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sideways and Garden State to win. |

Surprised that Before Sunset only got a screenplay nomination. Vera Drake wasn't eligible, while Eternal Sunshine's budget is over 20M and thus ineligible as well. Look like Sideways has a leg up to be this year's Far From Heaven. Also they must really love Jamie Foxx and want to give him something to nominate him for such a obscure made-for-TV film. |

Agh. I spent like 10 minutes looking to see if the other nominees had been announced yet...and in that time you posted this thread! Good start for Catalina SAndino Moreno, she stays in my top 5 best actress Oscar contenders. Sideways...this year's Lost in Translation? Or this year's Far From Heaven? BEfore Sunset (Julie Deply mainly) being snubbed for the most part is pretty surprising. This is always lots of fun to watch! |

Why was Vera Drake not eligible? the ISAs definition of a U.S. film: "A U.S. film is defined as (a) having at least one U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident credited in two or more of the following categories of responsibility: writer, director, producer; or (b) the film is set in the United States and [is] fully financed by a company whose principal office is in the United States." So Maria Full of Grace is considered a U.S. film since the writer/director is an American, while Vera Drake is considered too foreign. Go figure. |

On the other hand, I am surprised now that it wasn't nominated for Best Foreign either... |

Sideways deserves every nomination it got, and it should win them, too. Here's to it being rewarded at the NBR announcements tomorrow. |

Yeah, that's what Lecter meant. To be eligible, the film's budget has to be under $20M, and they also have a specific category for films that under $500,000. One complaint I have is that they like to spread the wealth too much. There are 15 slots for Best Feature, Best First Feature, and Best Feature under $500,000, and they chose 15 unique films. Considering the first category is a super-set of the other two, shouldn't there be a film that deserves to be nominated in two or even all three categories? |

Lots of love for Maria Full of Grace and Sidways. That doesn't come as much of a surprise, though (I still need to see both of them!). Also nice to see the even smaller films like Badass and Primer getting some recognition, too (still need to see both of those, too!). But... No love for Before Sunset? ![]() |

Where to start... xiayun wrote: BEST FEATURE Baadasssss! Kinsey Maria Full of Grace Primer Sideways Of course the ISA has to throw in a film like Primer, one that nobody has seen. But good for Primer. Even though my friend saw it and said it was awful. I'm not a fan of Baadaasss! being here. It was okay but it was nothing special to me. It's a love letter to his father, so in a way its sentimental. Where is Fahrenheit 9/11? Surely, with a $6 million budget, it qualified. Sideways will probably win this. Quote: BEST FIRST FEATURE Garden State vs Napoleon Dynamite People are quick to pick Garden State, but which film has had more impact? Most interesting award of the night. JOHN CASSAVETES AWARD (Given to the best feature made for under $500,000) Mean Creek BEST DIRECTOR Alexander Payne, Sideways BEST SCREENPLAY Richard Linklater & Julie Delpy & Ethan Hawke, Before Sunset BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY Zach Braff, Garden State BEST FEMALE LEAD Catalina Sandino Moreno, Maria Full of Grace BEST MALE LEAD Paul Giamatti, Sideways Jamie Foxx gets nominated for a non-Ray and non-Collateral movie? He will not win this award but the Oscar is his. |

WOW. I am stunned and shocked to my utter core that Before Sunset was shutout. robbed of Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture nominations. I'd say cinematography and Best Actor as well, but they arent as strong as the other three and having not seen the other nominees (most of them) I couldn't say! Nice for Sideways.... I have heard Badaaaasss was amazing, great to see some recognition to a small and mostly unnoticed film. Primer appeared a bunch of times in the nods.... |

The winner of the Producers Award received an unrestricted grant of $20,000 funded by Bravo and American Express. Jem Cohen, director of Chain, won the eleventh annual Turning Leaf Someone To Watch Award, a $20,000 grant created to honor a director of singular vision who has not yet received appropriate recognition. The award is funded by Turning Leaf Vineyards. Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman, directors of Born Into Brothels, won the eighth annual DIRECTV/IFC Truer Than Fiction Award, presented to an emerging director of non-fiction features. The award is accompanied by a $20,000 unrestricted grant funded by DIRECTV and IFC. A Special Distinction Award was given to the ensemble cast of Mean Creek: Rory Culkin, Ryan Kelley, Scott Mechlowicz, Trevor Morgan, Josh Peck, and Carly Schroeder. The nominating committee was struck by these young actors who turned in performances so uniformly unselfish and so intricately in tune with each other that it became impossible to single any one of them out from their extraordinary achievement together. |
