Might as well post it here. I also read somewhere that there is a movie adaptation of the play The History Boys lurking around and is to be released this year if only it gets Tony nominations. And now, it is perceived to be the frontrunner to win.

Also, some interesting notes:

The Wedding Singer is based on the Adam Sandler movie.
The Color Purple is based on the book and Steven Spielberg's film. Curiously, said film got 11 Oscar nominations (and no wins).
Tarzan is based on the Disney animated film - also with Phil Collins' score which was unnominated.
Julia Roberts' much ballyhooed play Three Days of Rain only got 2 nominations.
Jersey Boys is the musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Woooooooooo.

A production based on The Wedding Singer, though. That seems interesting.

Only David cares.

Anyway, there is a movie based on the play The History Boys, to be released sometime this year.

Hehe, Samuel Barnett, who is nominated for featured actor in a play for The History Boys plays one of the students named Posner: "I'm a Jew. I'm small. I'm a homosexual. And I live in Sheffield. I'm fucked.

I've been reading reviews for the play and it's pretty much a consensus that's the play is very good. The film version was made by the actual play's director and the original cast. It's an amalga, of Dead Poet's Society and Goodbye, Mr. Chips - only a little bit darker. Hopefully, it's the same quality as the play.

History Boys won 6 of its 7 nominations inc. Best Play making it the biggest winner of the night. The only award it lost is Featured/Supporting Actor. Fox Searchlight is apparently going to push the feature film version in hopes that it gets some awards attention later in the year - perhaps starting in Toronto.

Man, I want to get up to New York and see Drowsy Chaperone. The Wedding Singer looks dreadful though. And The Color Purple...if someone could first explain to me WHY that needed to be a musical, maybe I'd think about it.

I saw The Pajama Game revivial....it's spunky and harmless and all, but I have a hard time believing it's more worthy than the new Sweeney Todd. I was creeped out just watching the TV performance last night.

Christian, did you see Cynthia Nixon's girlfriend?

And I have a friend who says The History Boys is every bit as good as it's award haul would indicate. I could have gone with him, but I decided to just be patient and wait for the movie. Shouldn't have.

I was surprised Sweeney Todd AND Patti LuPone lost. She hasn't won since Evita in 1980, no?

Yeah, but ironically, not in the same film! She was in the last HP film, which did not have Uncle Dursley in it!

A quick trip to google during the next commerical break proved conclusively (well, as conclusive as google can provide) that the woman was Cynthia's girlfriend. Actually, I like the way Christian typed it. "Girl"friend.
