Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
I'm positive Viola will be winning the Oscar. Streep doesn't even care about winning awards but she's thrilled when she does.

Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
Of course, last year by the end of GG show, The Social Network looked unbeatable after winning GG/BFCA along with all the previous critics awards, then guilds came in and changed everything. We still have to wait for PGA/DGA to get the clear picture since that actually has the membership overlap.

Streep referenced Mia Wasikowska. Best moment of the night!

Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
The Artist seems the runaway Oscar winner from where I'm sitting. I have a hard time envisioning the other films winning, I guess Hugo, but it's a tough sell for me.

Clooney owns Hollywood.

Three Director wins for Scorsese at the Globes and none of those films won.

Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
So BFCA helped The Help, while GG gave some boost to The Descendants and Hugo, but in the end, The Artist continues to win the awards it expected to and wasn't hurt in the process. Having no clear No. 2 is the best news for it.

Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
So what needs to happen for a movie to gain on The Artist for The Descendants or The Help winning SAG Ensemble and, ideally, one of the two winning the BAFTA award for Best Picture. If one gets these two, then they are back in the game.
As for Hugo, I really don't see it winning BP at the Oscars, even if it wins the DGA...

Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
I wonder if any film, outside of The Artist, will get any box-office boost out of this. I suppose The Descandants, but not much (since it won only two awards in total). I don't see Hugo's run being helped by its way.
I suppose The Iron Lady could capitalize on this too.

The Iron Lady, definitely. Maybe even more than The Artist.

Once it gets 10 Oscar nominations, I see it getting to $45-55 million at least.

Gervais was all right. Nothing memorable, but I laughed a few times.
There should be a new host next year, though, definitely. I agree. A change of pace.

Once it gets 10 Oscar nominations, I see it getting to $45-55 million at least. Really? I'm not quite sure. Its a silent film still. Hell, its had this buzz for months now and it really hasn't been performing that well even for a limited release. I think 50m seems like absolute best-case. And of course it'll be bigger than Hurt Locker. Hence "one of". I think the studio has been purposely holding it back, waiting for the televised awards to come in and give people extra incentive to see it since on its own it's a pretty hard. Now that it has awards to back up the praise there should be a lot more interest in the coming weeks, especially with Oscar nominations only a week away. It'll be expanding to at least 500 theaters on Friday, and from there it'll probably start doing pretty well, as it's one of only a few major Oscar contenders that won't be past its box office peak. I think it can still do really well, and easily pass $50 million if it wins Picture (And especially if it pulls a mini-sweep). When I saw it today I heard some crazy-good WOM outside the theater.

Re: Official Golden Globes ceremony thread
Ricky Gervais was obviously put through a filter this time. Look at the celebrities: Brad & Angelina, Ashton Kutcher, RDJ. And he didn't mention any of them, 'cept for a brief mention of Demi and Ashton divorcing? He definitely was told certain people were unmentionable.
Which kind of sucks that some people do take themselves too seriously.
Best sly dig of the night to Clooney for talking about how great Brad is professionally and how much good he's doing in the world... and not once mentioning Angelina.

I really can't take much from these wins, other than the fact that Plummer and Spencer are almost definitely winning

Best imagined sly dig of the night. He was giving a quick toast to his friend and fellow nominee, it wasn't a Pitt/Jolie dual lifetime achievement award introduction. There was no reason for Clooney to mention Angelina Jolie in this context.
