Quote:
So bleak that ABC just scored a new Oscar advertiser: Culver Restaurants, a regional hamburger chain that will run its first national TV spot during the Academy Awards, a 60-second spot touting its "unbelievable" customer service. As MediaWeek describes it in a post today, the spot features "a fairly psychotic-looking cynic, "Dave," who can't believe how polite the Culver's waitress is in one of the chain's commercials. He shakes his head at this "outbreak of neatness."
This comes on the heels of another story, also from MediaWeek, reporting that, with less than a week to go before the Academy Awards telecast, ABC is scrambling to find replacement sponsors for the cosmetics firms that customarily advertise on the show. MediaWeek said that L'Oreal Paris, which had spent nearly $41 million in Oscar advertising since 2004, has entirely dropped out of the telecast. It's a big loss because, last year, L'Oreal had bought 180 seconds of airtime, second only to the 210 seconds purchased by General Motors, which has also backed out of this year's show.
While the ad slippage is clearly sparked by the country's economic woes, many advertisers are abandoning the Oscars because of its steady ratings decline. As the ratings slide, so do the ad buys. According to current estimates, ABC could have a 15% drop from last year's estimated $81.1-million ad take. MediaWeek quotes Brad Adgate, an aptly named research executive at Horizon Media who was bearish on all awards shows. As he bluntly assesses the problem: "The shows are too long, and too much time is spent on the less prestigious categories." He added that the Oscars now have a median viewer age of 49.5 years, which puts it outside the target 18-49 audience most advertisers seek.

Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway will star in a singing-and-dancing number with host Hugh Jackman at the opening of the Academy Awards ceremony this Sunday!
Has no one seen Ella Enchanted?!?
It was one of my favorite films of 2004, and the first time I got to see the talent of Anne Hathaway. Her performance of Queen's Find Me Somebody To Love at the giant's tavern is one of the best comical-musical performances in a film ever.
So damn right! - - I'm looking forward to this aspect of the Oscar show this year!!!

I'm partial to her comedic turn in Rachel Getting Married.

One big change reportedly will be what goes on in the theater during commercial breaks. Usually award shows come to a dead halt, or stars start seat hopping. The producers want a party feel to continue even when the cameras aren't rolling and are working to achieve that. They don't want half the audience out drinking and smoking in the Kodak lobbies.
A source close to the Oscar production at the Kodak theater has managed to peek at the rundown. He tells me that the total length of the broadcast clocks at 3:15 hours, and the Oscars are due to end at 8:45pm ET.
Although the production book doesn’t list the awards presenters, or performers (all marked as TBA), it does offer a glimpse as to what’s in store. One segment is “Hugh at the Pianoâ€Â, another is a 4:00 minute production number.
The show is divided into five parts, each one highlighting a process in the making of a movie, with the subsequent awards mirroring that theme. Part 1 is The Blank Page. Part 2 is production (with the art direction, make up and costume awards following). Part 3 is Cinematography. Part 4 is Post Production (editing, sound, SFX). Part 5 is Scoring. And then it’s time for the big awards which obviously don’t need a user manual to make them viewer friendly.
More: maybe as a way to remind viewers that there were more movies made in 2008 then the high-brow ones released in December and nominated for the Oscars, five montage sequences titled “2008 yearbook†will be spread throughout the show, summing the year in various genres: Animated Film, Romance, Comedy, Documentary Film, and Action.
The awards line-up, as dictated to me by my source, is (all times Eastern):
Those times must be Pacific, not Eastern. No way the show starts at 2:30 local time.

I noted the same thing earlier at Awards Daily. Has to be PST.

Hah, they're leaving most of the Slumdog categories at the end. From Sound Editing at 7:22 PST on, it could be all about Slumdog, with foreign and two leading throwing in.
