Walk the Line did as well as Dreamgirls, yet didn't even get nominated, and Crash wasn't nominated.
Marty and the Departed are locked. Have been since Nicholson signed on the dotted line.

But Babel ROCKS. And I'm pretty happy for it.
That's how I feel.
I mean, Little Children was better, but stood no chance. The Departed > Babel, too... and it's a shame it puts Dreamgirls in a better spot.
But Babel was great. I'm glad to see it the win.

I almost feel upset with a Babel win, which is weird because I thought the movie was really good. Just not as good as The Departed. In Marty's favor, a lot of people are going to be able to vote for the Oscar who have worked with Marty during his decades long career.

I've seen Dreamgirls, and I've seen Departed, and in no way, shape or form does it deserve a 'leg up' over Departed. It shouldn't even be contending for Best Picture. Babel I havn't seen yet, so I need to give it a chance, but I'm a little tired of the 'multi-plot/fractured story line movie=awards success' pattern that has been developing...(Traffic, Crash, Babel, and to a lesser extent, Syriana)
...I have a bad feeling some shit movie is going to win Best Picture. I want some surprises...Why can't people be a little controversial and nominate something like United 93? Can anyone honestly tell me that had Dreamgirls been released anytime before October that it would be getting this many nominations? I think if this and Departed had swapped release dates, this would be a whole different story. As would many other Oscar races, which I still to this today do not understand.

Babel, Dreamgirls and The Departed are tied as frontrunners, I think. The Queen isn't dead as some feared, 2 wins is pretty solid. Little Miss Sunshine didn't win anything, so I think it's still solidly at the fifth slot.

I don't know when it got started being taken seriously. Publicity for the winners is never bad. Especially for Babel which until 3 weeks ago, I thought was dead. *shrug*. People watch the Globes though, and that helps. I like watching the Globes more than the Oscars, it's a much more accessible and fun show. It's just, I don't think the media and the academy should weight it too heavily.
I agree in spirit. The HFPA has no real credentials beyond being a random group of journalists none of us have ever heard of. But this is arguably the biggest award show before the Oscars, and if nothing else gives Babel and Dreamgirls more notice during the whole voting process, which starts next week after the nominations I think?

Nope. I'd die if Dreamgirls won. Jamie Foxx doesn't need encouragement.

I guess this means Babel will probably get a pretty sizable expansion this weekend.

And the more people that see it, the more people are going to leave the theater going, "Hunh? WTF was that?"

Unfortunately, you can't vote against movies.
But if you could, Babel would have no chance. Then again, neither would The Departed or Dreamgirls.

Thanks andaroo and loyal.
That's coming up very soon. I can't wait.
I think I'm actually going to like all of the nominees this year, and that's a shocker for me. The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine were awesome, Babel was very good; I just have to see Dreamgirls (which I can tell I will like already) and The Queen (I don't know about this one... but we'll see).
Peace,
Mike.

**pukes all over thread**
.....sorry...
Okay, so, the performances are deemed unworthy of a win, the screenplay is deemed unworthy of a win and the director is deemed unworthy of a win, yet the film itself is somehow the best of the year !!?? Great logic there.
I don't suspect Babel will make any waves at the Oscars, but should hell freeze over and it wins best picture, it will be the worst winner of that award in, well, forever maybe.
Anyway, reasonably entertaining show. I enjoyed Hugh Laurie, Meryl Streep (so true about those smaller films), America Ferrera (I don't even watch the show and she brought a tear to my eye), Sacha Cohen, Hanks and Beatty, good ol Marty and of course the shit-eating grin of Jack Nicholson.
Bring on the Oscars and, hopefully, better nominees.

What a shitty bunch of winners.
Babel for BP?
Mirren for BA?
Happy Feet for Best Song?
WTF. Somebody needs to be shot. And then shot again. Then beheaded. And shot again. Die motherfuckers.

They really, really sucked this year. Beyond belief. At least J-Hud got her GG, let's hope she get's the Oscar which I'd say now is a pretty sure bet.

No, I don't.
I think it'll go to United 93.
