I don't know about having so much rules and restrictions to it though, I'd rather we choose from the whole selection. Doing it year-by-year, 1985 first, etc., would cut down the availability and fun of choosing them IMO.
In any case, it won't be more than 3-5 picks each time, whether we group them by the year or not, just so you know. Otherwise, we'll never be able to agree on one.

I doubt there's a nominee that not a single one of us has seen. With that in mind, I nominate the following two:
Hannah and Her Sisters
Prizzi's Honor
Two I haven't seen:
Atlantic City
The Accidental Tourist

Hah, I wanted to nominate Prizzi's Honor!
I wanted to nominate it because I think from the plot outline it sounds like a very accessible picture which is good for the start.
Oh and it stars Jack Nicholson. Nuff' said.

My current bottom line:
We try out different methods. I expect this club to run on for a long time and with time we can decide for the best method.
I suggest this week 4-5 of us suggest one film, then we make a poll on it and vote.
In two weeks, when we start this again, we will try xiayun's year-grouping method or winners-grouping. Etc.
Eventually we'll get the right one.

For once, my friend, we appear to be on the same page.
It's a wonderful film, but one that's really fallen out of favor in recent years. It's an oddball little film, though...its rythms and pacing are really off-kilter. It's accessible, but not quite as accessible as you'd think.
Nevertheless, I think it's a good start.
At the very least, if we watched it, it would put to rest silly folks suggesting that Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a remake. They couldn't be further apart.

Since everyone should suggest one film, I'd say...
Yoshue's suggestion: Hannah and Her Sisters
Dr. Lecter's suggestion: Prizzi's Honor
If andaroo wants to keep Judgement at Nuremberg as his suggestion, it will be the third.
Now we have space for 2-3 more suggestions.

3 Good Suggestions...I said I wasn't crazy about Nuremburg, but it DOES have merit, and more than a little at that.

Since Glenn Close could be considered the actress of 1980's considering she had 5 nominations (many thought she should have won at least one), I'd go with one of her films: Dangerous Liaisons.

You can still participate from time to time, though, whenever you want to/get a chance to. With us being close to 20 members, I think that sometimes one or two won't be able to do it anyway. : )

Sadly, there I already went out to the maximum of five (originally supposed to be 3-4), but I promise you'll get a chance too eventually : )

Heh, it's ok. I just wanted to make sure you were getting enough support. That, and I overlooked Shack's post.... was mulling over what film to pick... and, well, the rest is history.

Thats me.
Oy, I find it depressing that most movies I want to nominate end up only being Best *Foreign* Film nominees. Tis alright. We have hundreds of films to pick from.

About a minute ago, I realized The Player *wasn't* nominated for Best Picture, and I died a little inside.

I also hope that people don't really go just by the IMDB ratings alone
THE POLL HAS STARTED
The poll will be closed by Monday so only the results by then will count.
I ask that only the members of the club vote in the poll. Of course, if someone else wants to become a member, they may vote too, but those who don't intend to participate, I ask to refrain from voting, please!
