Up review from yesterday's AICN screeningSounds like maybe Carl the old man dies perhaps that's enough to push it outside the "it's still a cartoon" bias.

Quote: I got nervous. Very nervous. In the first 45 minutes – I had already formed an attachment that made me think of Carl as an amalgam of my own father and grandfather – and are they going to carve my heart out? Will they kill every boy & girl’s grandfather on screen and force the little kids to grapple with the weight of simple mortality?
Worse. Will they reawaken that fear in me?
PIXAR films flirt with dangerous territory, but often guide us in the general direction of security and the hope of a happy ending. However, there was something about that first 45 minutes that had me feel that there could be a dark twist ahead.
And I was right about the dark twist, only… not exactly, but incredibly satisfied.

That's ballsy shit. But speaking of old man flicks, Gran Torino didn't get a single nomination.

I agree it wasn't a good movie dramatically (though still entertaining), but everyone else liked it. Taken, Slumdog and Gran Torino all kicked off with some extremely impressive word-of-mouth in a very short period of time...

Considering how much money it made and how the older crowd liked it, had it been released wide around Thanksgiving, I think its Oscar shutout would have been reversed.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
I think our top 3 are accurate, these are the obvious frontrunners based on what we know right now, and will probably continue to be till people actually start watching these movies, even then I think all 3 will be accuarate during awards season. What the other 2 are I have no idea, Avatar maybe? What else? I'm just not sure right now, and I really don't see PE having even the slightest shot, despite talent involved.

If you voted for The Fighter, redistribute those votes. It's not coming out this year and Darren isn't directing. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111800 ... id=13&cs=1David O Russell will direct with Bale now co-starring with Marky Mark.

Up has been rated PG, which is one VERY small step towards a BP nomination.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
the veil has been lifted on Shutter Island http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/04/22/emp ... more-25725Quote: The unwinding of the Empire magazine 20th Anniversary pearl necklace goes on and on with yet another exclusive revealed this afternoon. This time, they have a behind-the-scenes image of Martin Scorsese talking to Leonardo Di Caprio and Michelle Williams on the set - or more likely location - of Shutter Island. I’ve cropped off Leo in the picture above.
Empire atrribute descriptions of the film in their piece to both Mark Ruffalo and Scorsese himself. If that hype is to be believed, this will be one of Scorsese’s “great films.†Those quotes coming right up…
Mark Ruffalo, who plays one of Di Caprio’s fellow US Marshals:
This could be one of [Scorsese's] great films. He gets to do everything he loves about film: noir, dream sequences, suspense, tough urban stuff. It’s absolute madness, twist upon twist.
“Absolute madness.†And then Empire tell us:
Scorsese himself has likened the film to Orson Welles’ take on Kafka’s The Trial, or Hitchcock at his weirdest.
Or maybe Shock Corridor? That’s the vibe I’m getting.
Probably the most revealing information on the film so far came from a Cahiers du Cinema article last month (yep, it’s still going, no matter what Mike Nichols says) excerpting the on-set diary of Scorsese-shadow, Argentinean filmmaker Celine Murga.
Rope of Silicon scanned the magazine and posted the salient pages. Here’s one quote I found particularly fascinating:
We [Scorsese and Murga] talk about filming dreams, nightmares, hallucinations. The real of reverie. His idea is to film them as directly as possible, like they were real…
He tells me he thinks that for those who have dreams, or nightmares, or hallucinations, those things ARE real; which makes them even more terrifying. His intention is to convey ambiguity: it must not be asy to clearly distinguish between the real of the real and the realm of reverie. That, I think, places you more within the point of view of the main character, Teddy.
Many of his [Scorsese's] films tend to do that, to create deformed realities, which generate the sensation of nightmarish worlds. For many of his characters reality is a nightmare being lived out (Taxi Driver, After Hours).
This sounds incredibly interesting. I, for one, simply cannot wait to see what rattlebag of tricks Scorsese pulls to create these effects. Might be rather amusing. There’s a reasonable chance it will be truly shocking.
This Teddy to which Ms. Munga refers is Di Caprio’s character and it seems that he’s failing to keep purchase on saneworld in this film. Anybody who knows Lehane’s novel may care to chime in with an explanation below, but please do mark up spoilers clearly. Sounds like the opposite of a commercial hit and could polarize critics. One to watch for sure.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
I'm surprised Up is PG. Thematic elements, maybe?
As for Shutter Island, well, Scorsese is one of no more than five directors that can sell a movie on his name alone. Plus, I think people expect his movies to be a little "off" at this point. If there's one guy who can sell an almost surrealist film to either audiences or the Academy at this point, it's him.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Up is decidedly adult. Not graphic or violent mind you but very very adult.
As for Marty, his films average only 36 Mill. Remove the gangster sheer and Shutter could be in trouble. Departed, Casino, Goodfellas, and Gangs of NY account for 300 Mill of the 700 Mill his films have earned.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Dude, he's made like twenty-five films over forty years. Of course I meant since Gangs Of New York, basically. The guy's ebbed and flowed, obviously, but he's never been bigger in the last seven years. Even a lot of average teenagers know who he is now thanks to The Departed and because the popularity of Goodfellas and Casino has been on the upswing in the last few years.

I would need to a trailer to erase the doubt but I'm not sold that the goodwill from The Departed will be enough to overcome the subject matter. It's been less than 10 years since Bringing Out the Dead and it's 16.7 Mill gross. Obviously Marty will see a bump since he won an Oscar but I wouldn't go expecting anything over 40 Mill just yet.

Cape Fear made like $120 million adjusted for inflation, and the marketing is way more in that vein.

The marketing (so far a one-sheet) is actually more like a J-Horror film 3. Cape Fear wasn't nominated for Best Picture. None of these bode well for Shutter Island.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
I'm talking the bottom line, really, in audience appeal.
Plus, Scorsese is way more powerful now. That was a year after Goodfellas lost.
I'm not predicting Shutter Island for Best Picture either. But I'm not ruling it out at all.
