Looks like the Revenant will knock down guild stats like a bowling strike, with Best Picture after no SAG, WGA or ACE nominations, or PGA win
As I mentioned in the BAFTA winners thread, I'm still not 100% sold that The Revenant will win Best Picture, though it's probably likely to do so. It's just... I dunno man, it's a weird year! As you mentioned, The Revenant has no SAG, WGA, or ACE nominations - and the only places where the film has won Best Picture are with awards bodies that didn't award Inarritu and Birdman last year (Globes and BAFTA).
This suggests to me that the Oscars' preferential ballot for Best Picture could end up rewarding Spotlight or The Big Short (with Inarritu winning Best Director). I'm not at all certain about that though - I'm not certain about anything anymore. :S
Peace,
Mike
I think you could be on to something with The Revenant only winning Best Picture in places it didn't last year. But then again Innaritu repeat at DGA seems to be key
I do think the following things are true:
- If Birdman hadn't won BP/BD last year, The Revenant would have likely cruised to Best Picture this year. BAFTA had no reason to worry about Birdman, so The Revenant could be the dominant film it would have been in a non Birdman world, especially against two American-ish films in Big Short and Spotlight
- If Spotlight was destined to narrowly win Best Picture at the Oscars, DGA and later Best Director going to Innaritu or Miller was the play
- GG Drama shouldn't be trusted as meaningful
