Re: Biggest surprise of the nominees?
It's about momentum though, and today is a good day for Streep's camp after Davis seemed to have pulled ahead with a win and great speech at BFCA (and The Help dominating a lot of talks up to this point). Also Spencer being practically a lock for winning supporting could be a good enough honor for a 4-nom film in some academy members opinion.

We still should not count out Williams.

I feel we can count Williams out. A solid third nomination for her at a young age, but this race is between Streep and Davis.

Re: Biggest surprise of the nominees?
I'm more surprised by Tree of Life than Extremely Loud. I'm kicking myself for not predicting EL as the coyote stealth guild nominee, a month ago if you told me "Well Dragon Tattoo is going to get a lot of guilds and then be considered a lock, then Extremely Loud will troll it like the Reader on TDK" I would've said "Of course that's what will happen!!". I was on the right track predicting an Oscary bait movie with weak reviews to get in and one of the big players to crap the bed even with 9 noms, I just predicted Marilyn instead of EL and Moneyball to get owned instead of Dragon Tattoo
But I was feverishly in "TOL is not getting nominated academy hates stuff like that" mode from the start. If you gave me 13 noms I probably would've left Tree of Life off. I'm guessing 80-90% of the ballots it showed up on were #1 votes

The funny part, for those who watched the live nominations, is that they had eight slots lined up for the nominees, then snuck in EL&IC in the top middle portion of the screen, as a shock.

It's really just like a sick joke. Everything about it, of all the possible shock nominations the irrelevant fanless Daldry flick. Yuck.

I'm not the film expert like some of you guys, but I was wondering if the negative reviews of The Iron Lady are going to hurt Streep by the time Feb. 26th rolls around? It may, but after The Iron Lady got in Best Makeup while The Help missing those makeable categories, the odd is certainly looking up for Streep getting her third Oscar. ...only her third? Now there's a surprise.
