So I just saw this. I'm still recovering from the emotional rollercoaster ride it put me through. This was an AMAZING film.

And PGA!
So it has so far received noms from:
AFI BFCA PGA DGA WGA ASC
And Makeup shortlist. It won Director at GG and Boston Film Critics, BP at NYFCO, and was runner-up at LAFCA, St. Louis, and NSFC. If we are not looking at the name and simply treat it as some Film A, wouldn't we say it's a lock?

Yeah, it's a lock at this point.

Whodathunk that the film to join NCFOM in Lockdom would be this? Amazing.

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
I'm in shock at its run. This better be the best movie ever made. Though I refuse to call it a lock. Hell, just last week we said Into the Wild was one and look where it's at now. But its the closest to it other than No Country.

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
I'm currently thinking:
Picture Direction Adapted Screenplay Cinematography Makeup
With outside chances in Editing and S. Actor (I still think von Sydow could easily get swept up in the rising buzz for this).

This has jumped to #2 behind No Country for Old Men in terms of nominations likelihood.

It is very much in. I'm so sad for Atonement, but at least a quality film takes its place.

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
Looks like I've got another 2007 movie to see. Knowing my luck, this and There Will Be Blood will both open the day before I go to Montana for a week-long service immersion project, I'll see Blood that night, then I'll come back the next weekend and Diving Bell will already have closed so that they can keep playing Aliens vs. Predator or some shit like that. God, why can't the people in my town have my kind of taste in these things?

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
As much as I love Johnny (he's my personal favorite actor), I'm kind of glad he didn't do this. I think his celebrity would have detracted a bit from the character. Plus, Mathieu Amalric gives an AMAZING performance.
Also, I believe Johnny Depp was originally attached before it was decided that the film would be shot in French. Ronald Harwood's original script was in English.

The question now is...does it have a chance to win anything at the Oscars too?

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
It could win makeup if nominated, and Cinematography is a possibility. Also Max von Sydow, if he gets swept in, could become the only possible spoiler to Bardem as a career achievement award. Then director is a long shot.

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
Yeah...if von Sydow gets in (unlikely), he'll win. Makeup is possible just because it'll be the only real contender in the category. For Director and Picture, if No Country and TWBB split each other, this would likely be the spoiler.

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
Picture...I say no way. A sub-$20 million grossing BP winner? NAH:::
Make-Up is likely, but only IF actually nominated which is not a given, IMO.
Von Sydow won't stop Bardem's train and if Deakins doesn't win, then TWBB is next in line for cinematography.
So, I say make-up is possible and Director as a huge spoiler.

Re: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Will Be Nominated Club
I'm leaning towards this for that final spot, with Atonement and Into the Wild very nearby begging desperately for the Academy to be more normal and go with them

Too bad, too bad. It got the most important editing nom but still failed to grab a BP slot.

Well, after this, I vow not to predict a foreign film to get in unless it makes 100 mil.
