Re: American Gangster thread: 07 frontrunner?
By the way, here's the nomination rundown I think it can get
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Editing Best Score
maybe solid chance: Best Supporting Actor(Josh Brolin... I actually think this is more likely than Crowe) Best Screenplay(Good but it doesn't stand out)
maybe probably nots: Best Supporting Actor(Crowe) Best Supporting Actress(Ruby Dee could get the elderly vote) Best Cinematography(I would give one to it, don't know if it can gain support for that though)

I'm still saying the only sure shot is Best Actor, all the others are just possible. And I would rule out Russell Crowe.

Re: American Gangster thread: 07 frontrunner?
If this is nominated, and I doubt it will be, it'll be another Munich. Nominated on pedigree alone with 0 chance of winning.
I'd give it a solid B+. Good way to spend a couple hours, not Picture of the Year material by a long shot.
The perfs were pretty good; nominations are possible there if they want to throw the film a bone. Too bad the ex-wife wasn't in more of the movie, she stole the scenes she was in.

Down to 79% at RT and more alarmingly, the average is below 7 at 6.9. COTC is also down to 7.3 average. A win is definitely out, if it hadn't been from the beginning. A nomination is still possible, but I'm more learning toward a Collateral type of fate (an acting nom for Washington) and one or two tech noms.

Re: American Gangster thread: 07 frontrunner?
BO is going to help a lot though. If it opens to $50m and gross $150-200m total as it's looking like right now, not sure if academy could ignore it with that caliber of a team. A Beautiful Mind, although certain more baity, had similar ratings critically. I think Oscar will feel they need to include it if the other contenders all have more indie-feel as it appears the case right now, especially if Charlie Wilson's War disappoints.

As Loyal said earlier in this thread, box office doesn't mean what it once did. Still, the last film of this kind to make over $150 million was Chicago, so it could actually mean something...

Re: American Gangster thread: 07 frontrunner?
I would say this wasn't really an Oscar-worthy film, other than the performances from the two leads (although I'm not sure I'd give Crowe a nod).
I can't see Denzel missing out on a nom, though.
