Here's the Hollywood Reporter's review of Infamous, and it's gushing.

Quote:
Bottom line: A second look at Truman Capote's journey to write "In Cold Blood" that against all odds is as good as "Capote."

Variety, on the other hand...

"Infamous" doesn't measure up to its predecessor and seems unlikely to echo the attention it received.

Great stuff. This thread was... magical! last year. :hahaha:

The Children of Men should be included by the way.

I added it.

If anybody else knows of a film that I didn't include, shout it out.

And can we do something about the sticky thread situation since nobody's doing the Best Picture Club thing for the past few months? The Contenders II and The Oscar Winners 1927-2005 would fit nicely up there, and as soon as a schedule is available, I'll chart one for us, too.

And we know not to bump threads now, so feel free to take down the announcement thread.

Is this just for potential BP contenders, or for any category? Because if it's any category, maybe you might want to add the animation contenders, too (Cars, Flushed Away, etc.).

It's just for the top 8 categories at first (picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, orginal screenplay, and adapted screenplay) As time goes by, it will be reduced down to Best Picture.

I'm not a Hollywood reporter subscriber, but Little Miss Sunshine apparently went over very well at the 32nd Deauville Festival in France.

http://hollywoodreporter.com/thr/intern ... 1003086941
Quote:
'Twelve,' 'Sunshine' well-received at Deauville

DEAUVILLE, France -- The competition section at the 32nd Deauville Festival of American Cinema got under way here Monday with a duo of well-received movies. Michael Cuesta's multi-strand coming-of-age movie "Twelve and Holding" kicked off proceedings, drawing a strong response from the audience at the 1,500-seat theater, which was nearly full despite the Monday-morning screening time. The movie, which explores some tough themes, including pre-teen sex and child obesity, will be released by Diaphana in France on Sept 20. Cuesta was in town to talk up the film, his second trip to Deauville after bringing his debut effort "L.I.E." here in 2002. The second movie to unspool in the 11-strong lineup of independent U.S. films was the crowd-pleasing "Little Miss Sunshine," a Fox Searchlight release directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The mildly black comedy starring Greg Kinnear and Toni Colette drew spontaneous applause at its musical climax and sustained applause when the credits rolled.

If it keeps making headlines and it's box office remains steady, it's not impossible for it to make some noise.

The Fountain screams "pretentiousness" to me, but I bet anything it'll come across extremely well in the film fans community (maybe because it screams pretentiousness, heh). A certain candidate for IMDB's Top 250, though it won't be up for any major Oscars.

The more I look at the big picture, The Last King of Scotland/Forrest Whitaker is looking more and more like it could be this year's Capote. Capote was released 9/30/2005 and The Last King of Scotland gets a limited release on 9/27/2006. Both are historic biopics that star actors who has been around, but nobody outside huge film fanatics really know them. How many film buffs even know Hoffman was in Twister? I first discovered Whitaker in the Charlie Parker biopic, Bird, directed by Clint Eastwood, but he's basically just a skilled actor who's done good supporting work in films and TV, but nothing that's made him anybody of note. Lots of similarities.

I'll be watching this one develope with much interest.

I actually kinda see The Queen resembling Capote as well. Helen Mirren is receiving glowing reviews for her work in that, and the movie itself isn't getting bad reviews either. Depending on the strength of Helen Mirren's nomination, The Queen might be nominated for Best Picture.

Here's the Hollywood reporter's review of The Fountain:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/re ... 1003087097

Not the greatest, but it doesn't bash it, either

Quote:
Jackman does everything required of him, and his range is quite admirable, while Weisz, who has nothing to prove, does looking gorgeous very nicely.

Well its clearly evident that The Fountain is going to be a fan film and not a critical darling. I guess this isnt too bad - as long as its a good and enjoyable film.

Fantastic for Bobby! This does indeed seem to be following teh path of another actor directed film - Goodnight and Goodluck. I love that film and Im anticipating this one even more as I like late 60s history.

Interesting cast as most of them arent ones you'd generally consider as awards bait - but I'd say they can pull it off.

Looks like Bobby and The Queen are the early front runners at this stage (with many more yet to come offcourse).

All Bobby needed was the reviews. It's got the acting muscle behind it in AMPAS with a cast like that. Unless Variety and THR and the Venice Festival are cuckoo, there's no way it doesn't get in with the support it's sure to have in the actor contingent. They make up a significant amount of the academy members, so there will be lots of friends stacking the vote for this one.

The Queen doesn't quite have that luxury, but the early reviews definitely make things look good for it's lead actress at this point.

Yes - Bobby has good buzz from two major festivals and positive reviews from the two biggest industry rags - so its definately off to a good start. Good point about all the AMPAS actor members supporting such a large cast (similar to Crash in that respect). I like the feel of this film i get from the reviews. The poster was simple but clever. Is there a trailer out for it?

The Queen could do a Capote and have big shot at a major acting nod, though maybe it wont get a best pic nom.

Man, if Estevez actually went and made a great film, I'll be shocked, but happy. It's good material.

But still. This is the guy who made The War at Home, or whatever the hell it was called. It was an excruciating experience.

I'm curious if Demi Moore, who has NEVER received an Oscar nomination, has a big enough part. (not that it mattered with William Hurt last year) She play's an alcoholic, so she's got that going for her, as well as a body of good career work, so she's a very strong contender for some recognition.
