Could Jean-Marc Vallée pull it off again with Wild?
I think back in November 2013 barely anyone (really anyone) was predicting Dallas Buyers Club for a Best Picture nom and not only did it end up getting one, it was one of the stronger contenders and won three Oscars.
Could Wild get in too? I have seen it a few days ago and it is a strong film, really strong. Reese Witherspoon is at her career-best, way ahead of Walk the Line, IMO and Laura Dern is damn good too. 127 Hours got a BP nod and I am sure that with more than five slots Into the Wild would have gotten one too, so there is an appreciation for these films.
Granted early reviews are not as strong as DBC (75/100 at MC, 90% at RT), but they can imrpove and they are still good. Witherspoon is a shoe-in for a nom and the screenplay is looking good too, IMO. I think this could be a surprise nominee (or not so surprising by the time the actual noms are announced).
