I agree with everything you said.

Obviously Apatow is bringing it up because his movie Bridesmaids was arguably the biggest word-of-mouth hit of the year, yet is barely in the Best Picture conversation because it's a broad, accessible comedy. I can understand his frustration, but I don't see how a Best Comedy category is successful. As Magnus indicated, chances are half the time the award would go to a humor-tinged drama of the Alexander Payne/James L. Brooks variety.

That's what the Golden Globes are for.

Adding a comedy category dilutes the awards.
