James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars
Quote: Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway will cohost this season’s Oscar ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced. Telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer have decided to continue the two-host trend from last year’s show, when Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin shared emceeing duties. But they clearly seem to be courting a different generation: Franco and Hathaway’s combined age (61) is less than Steve Martin’s.
I applaud Cohen, Mischer, and AMPAS for thinking outside the box and not going with a predictable choice. Both Franco and Hathaway are sharp and funny, and hosting the Oscars should allow them to show off different sides of their personalities. The only awkwardness will stem from the fact that Franco is a surefire Best Actor contender for his performance in 127 Hours, while after the mixed critical and commercial reaction to Love & Other Drugs, Hathaway is looking more and more like a long shot at best. Or wait…do we now have a good start-off topic for their hosting bits? http://insidemovies.ew.com/2010/11/29/j ... st-oscars/...I actually kind of like this? I agree with the EW article, it's nice to see them thinking outside the box for this kind of thing. And both Franco and Hathaway have proved they're funny individuals. I guess they don't care that Franco will probably be nominated.

Re: James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars
Strange.
Franco and Hathaway are, without a doubt, gifted, nuanced performers, but I don't know how they'll fare as Oscar hosts. This is a job suited for comedians. There's a reason they didn't hire Robert Redford and Jane Fonda to host in the '70s or Ethan Hawke and Claire Danes in the '90s--beautiful and talented doesn't equal natural Oscar host. I can imagine lots of dead air. Is Franco going to drop casual one-liners? (Maybe.) Is Hathaway going to, with confidence and sarcastic bite, poke fun at Clooney and Nicholson? (Doubtful.) This is what Oscar hosting -is-. I'm sure he'll be dapper. I'm sure she'll be gorgeous. But the laughs? I'm not sure at all. Besides her rather spot-on Katie Holmes impression, Hathaway's two stints as SNL host haven't been very memorable.
I s'pose this is meant to boost ratings amongst the ever-important, so-damn-elusive "Young Demographic," but it won't. Hiring Will Ferrell and Steve Carell to host might've. Or even Demetri Martin. Or perhaps Tina Fey. Or, the person I most want to see host, Jim Carrey. The average college student isn't going to pass up a game of beer pong because Milk/127 Hours star James Franco and the ever-elegant-and-prestigious Anne Hathaway are hosting, even if they are younger than, say, Billy Crystal or Steve Martin. Besides, Oscar viewership isn't limited by the host's appeal, it's limited by the movies they nominate. Joe Schmoe Oklahoma just doesn't give a shit who wins the HOT race between Portman and Bening. He doesn't care if Fincher gets his Oscar at long last. He's too busy watching Undercover Boss over on CBS (or seeing Yogi Bear with the family).

Re: James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars
if Franco hosts the Oscars, he has no chance to win for best actor, it would be weird seeing the moderator receiving an award (one of the most important)

There was a preview of this when Anne Hathaway hosted SNL recently.
I love her in the movies, but fully expect an underwhelming Oscar show this year.

Yeah, I'm not feeling this at all. Two fine actors, but Oscar hosts? The most random hosts (and even more random pairing) since Ryan Seacrest hosted the Emmys. Are they even in a movie together? Or... what?
I just think the Oscars should be hosted by those familiar with comedy, preferably stand-up comedy.

Yes, because that worked out so well for years now, going from one boring ceremony to another thanks to uninspired jokes and out of place hosts (some have even gotten stale on stage). I welcome the change and I'm looking forward seeing these two in action. They certainly can't be worse than last year's debacle with Baldwin & Martin.

Re: James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars
I don't know why the Academy is so focused on having a pair of co-hosts lately.
As good as Anne Hathaway is, James Franco has already proven he could do it singlehandedly.

Franco is aces. And Hathaway has potential. Both have pretty good timing. Should be fine.

Quote: Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway will cohost this season’s Oscar ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced What is going on here? Are they just trying to destroy the Oscars as the premiere awards show? If I see or hear one joke leading in any way to Franco and marijuana I might vomit. This is so stupid. Where's Jim Carey or something? Where's an actual entertainer? No offense to Franco and Hathaway, but one of them would be enough if I thought it made sense but it doesn't. Get someone who can actually host something and make it fun make good jokes. What are they supposed to be doing because neither of them are comedians or interviewers. So dumb...dumb idea.

Re: James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars
I just came back from the day after the Oscars, 2011. The optimists say Franco and Hathaway were gutsy choices and did well with what was given to them. The cynics say they sucked. Everyone else? They've already forgotten who hosted.

I'm not that surprised
IMO Hollywood is invested in making Franco and Hathaway superstar A listers. It's probably well deserved and they'll probably get there. But with help.
