Quote:
Radio, released October 2003, is a film directed by Mike Tollin that is based on the true story of T. L. Hanna High School football coach Harold Jones (Ed Harris) and a mentally challenged young man James Robert "Radio" Kennedy (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Also starring Debra Winger and Alfre Woodard, it was inspired by the 1996 Sports Illustrated article "Someone to Lean On" by Gary Smith.

James Robert Kennedy (born October 14, 1946 in Anderson, South Carolina, USA), grew up fascinated by radios. His nickname, Radio, was given to him by townspeople because of the radio he carried everywhere he went. He still attends T. L. Hanna High School and helps coach the football team. He is known to ask students before football games, "We gonna get that quarterback?"

This movie was filmed primarily in Walterboro, South Carolina because its buildings and downtown areas still fit the look of the era the film depicted.

Great performance by Cuba Gooding, but other than that, just a good movie. B-

Standard inspirational movie, but that didn't stop me from getting a little misty-eyed at the end. Ed Harris is always good and surprisingly so was Cuba Gooding Jr. It's always good to see Debra Winger in even a small role because we've been searching for her. I didn't dislike this movie, but it's the type of movie where there are no real surprises. My grade: C+/B-.

I agree with Atoddr's comments. A pretty good movie if a little hokey and predictable at times (I got teary-eyed toward the end too). Ed Harris and Cuba Gooding Jr. both gave good performances. I liked how the film had a little postcript about what the real Radio is doing today. I was left with a smile on my face by the end-awww....

It was actually better than I have expected. The movie was very very sappy and predictable and an Oscar-bait, but it did have a heart. Cuba Gooding Jr. was pretty good, but I was even more impressed by Ed Harris in this one. It's a good feel-good movie. Nowhere up to the standards of Rain Man or similar movies, but still good.
