The Nanny Diaries is a 2007 American comedy-drama film, based on the novel of the same name by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. Written and directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, it stars Scarlett Johansson, Alicia Keys, Paul Giamatti, and Laura Linney; and was produced by Richard N. Gladstein.

Very cute, entertaining and surprisingly poignant. The screenplay could have used a bit of work and some of the characters were underdeveloped, but both of the leads did a great job. Scarlett Johansson was charming and lovable, especially in her scenes with Nichoals Reese Art. Laura Linney was phenomenal, as usual - and gave her character so much development that it made her fascinating to watch. She steals every scene she is in, and actually gives one of my favorite performances of the year so far.

The Nanny Diaries starts off really smart and turns really stupid. (Personally, I prefer my movies the other way round.)

"Vacant-eyed" is the only way I can describe Scarlett Johansson's performance - - nobody does vacant-eyed with more authenticity than her! The rest of the cast is good, though ill served by the fading fast script.

Sure, overall, I get the message, and it's a good one, but - - Good God, Man - - did I need to be beaten over the head with it?

As an anthropology parody, I loved it! But then it went and got all mushy and shapeless. Too bad, this one coulda been great...

3 out of 5.

The film certainly had more depth than The Devil Wears Prada.
