Deconstructing Harry
Deconstructing HarryQuote: Deconstructing Harry is a black comedy film by Woody Allen released in 1997. This film tells the story of a successful writer called Harry Block, played by Allen himself, who draws inspiration from people he knows in real-life, and from events that happened to him, sometimes causing these people to become alienated from him as a result.
The central plot features Block driving to a university from which he was once thrown out, in order to receive an honorary degree. Three passengers accompany him on the journey: a prostitute, a friend, and his son, whom he has kidnapped from his divorced wife. However, there are many flashbacks, segments taken from Block's writing, and interactions with his own fictional characters.

Re: Deconstructing Harry
Instantly one of my favorite Woody films and maybe films period. One of the funniest films I've seen (and level with Love and Death for his funniest) but also with the most edge and anger(?) I've seen out of him. This is Woody unleashing something dark, but also with the humor he does best. I don't really know how I'd describe the plot of this to someone unknowing, but maybe that's the point. It's Woody truly being Woody maybe for his last time, and is maybe the most Woody being Woody film he has. Also wonderfully edited

One of my least favorites. This is one of those films where he's trying desperately to make anything but a Woody Allen movie, to his, and our, detriment.

Re: Deconstructing Harry
Watched it again. I've sort of decided this is the funniest movie I've seen.

Re: Deconstructing Harry
It is a work of genius. Absolutely loved it. It's also hilarious AND creative. Instantly one of Woody's best. It is not only relatable but it draws back the curtain on middle-class sensibilities. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and its direct approach is brave.
When anyone is asked: who is the best American director of all-time? nobody says Woody Allen, which is scandalous. He's definitely in the conversation.
